🌟 Celebrating Black History Month with Pot Dance and Drum
The Heartbeat of Care at IOOF! 🌟
In honor of Black History Month, our Pot Dance and Drum sessions highlight the rich traditions of African and Afro-Canadian culture. Using the local drum, Engoma, and inspired by the Luganda word Ensuwa (“The Pot”), residents engaged with music, dance, and storytelling in a vibrant, immersive experience. 🥁💃
Our recent session at IOOF Seniors Home, Barrie, on Friday, February 6th, 2026, from 2 PM–3 PM, began with an energizing Pot Dance performance. This icebreaker gently encouraged residents to step out of their comfort zones, setting the stage for interactive drum and dance activities. Residents had the opportunity to try the Engoma drum, feeling each beat as a therapeutic rhythm that brought joy, movement, and connection to the room.
The session concluded with a captivating Circle of Life Pot Dance, inspired by The Lion King, where Flavia shared her story, filling the space with hums, wows, and celebration of Afro-Canadian heritage. The experience sparked conversation, nostalgia, and excitement for future sessions.
Residents’ verdict? “Outstanding!”
Pot Dance and Drum – The Heartbeat of Care is a powerful reminder that art, music, and storytelling can break barriers, build confidence, and unite communities, honoring Black culture while creating meaningful connections for all.
