At C.O.R.E.

we use what is called a neurofunctional model, which takes into account all the systems in the body, our environment, stress, relationships and any other possible contributing factors in a person's life. This is a holistic model, but it is grounded in science, specifically neuroscience and the various branches of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and interpersonal neurobiology. What You Can Expect

Excellence requires time, understanding and clarity and we don't want you or us to feel rushed, stressed or unheard. We know this is unusual in our world of supposed 'quick fixes', fast-paced lifestyles and abundant conveniences, but we are committed to transforming the health of our community.

- open communication policy
- we trust the wisdom and intuition of your body
- expect to be treated as a whole human being (mind-body-brain-soul) not just a symptom, disease or illness
-You will feel heard and connected to, which creates the fertile ground for healing

History

Established in 2009. CORE performance, therapy, wellness was born out of a need for Connected, Objective, Responsible, Empowering health care. We recognize that most health care facilities strictly focus on symptoms, conditions, disease, and illness, and yet chronic disease, health care spending, mental health issues, pain is all on the rise. With this in mind we established a health care business that focuses instead on what is health, how do we achieve wellness throughout our lives, and how do we reach greater levels of performance in all aspects of our lives. Uniquely, we do this with a deep sense of social responsibility as we strive to create our own community that gives back to the greater community with self awareness. We pride ourselves on the fact that our business is continually evolving as knowledge changes, so we can offer our patients the most up to date perspectives, techniques and approaches to health care.

Running Injuries: Common Pitfalls and How to Stay on Track

Running is one of the simplest ways to stay active and build endurance, but it’s not without risks. Knowing what to watch for and how to care for your body can make all the difference.

Some of the most common running injuries include:

● Shin Splints – sharp, aching pain along the inner shin that worsens with activity

● Runner’s Knee – dull ache and pain around or behind the kneecap

● Achilles Tendinitis – stiffness or burning pain in the back of the lower leg to the heel

● Plantar Fasciitis – stabbing pain in the heel or arch

These issues usually aren’t caused by one dramatic moment but rather small, repeated stresses over time. Training too hard, wearing improper shoes, or ignoring early warning signs are some of the usual suspects. Learn more about how to prevent running injuries and how we can help!

Piriformis Syndrome: A Modern Guide to Deep Glute Pain and Lasting Relief

If you’re experiencing deep buttock pain, leg tightness, or sciatica-like symptoms—but imaging shows no spinal issues—you might be dealing with Piriformis Syndrome. This condition affects both athletes and sedentary individuals, and is often misdiagnosed or treated with generic stretching that misses the root cause.

At Core Performance Centre in North York, our approach is grounded in biomechanics, functional joint health, and long-term tissue resilience. Using principles from Functional Range Systems (FRS) and strength & conditioning science, we help clients restore function—not just reduce symptoms.

Piriformis Syndrome is a sign that your body’s movement strategy isn’t working efficiently, leading to pain. The key isn’t more stretching — it’s improving how your body distributes load.

It is now well understood and accepted that every MRI finding does not mean the same clinical presentation in every patient. Like any other joint, the spine experiences wear and tear also known as degenerative changes over time. But like every other joint, having sufficient work space and load capacity in the spine reduces your risk for overuse injuries such as degenerative disk disease. This patient had seen other health professionals who used passive care like laser, heat, TENS, and decompression machine with minimal success. However a few days of combining the right passive treatment with specific MOVEMENTS allowed him to be pain free quickly. Without targeting the anatomy and neurology of the tissues involved, we can’t expect any lasting effects other than lowering inflammation at best.

On August 16th I had surgery to repair a complete tear of the superior fibular retinaculum, which resulted in dislocation of the fibularis tendons.
-function of SFR: holds down fibularis tendons, which are evertors of the ankle, and provides lateral ankle support, proprioception of foot and ankle
-surgery to replace SFR with bone wax and deepening the groove behind the lateral malleolus by shaving off some of the fibular bone
- post-surgery fibreglass cast for 3 wks (completely non-weight bearing)& walking boot for 3 wks
- after taking off the cast, severe atrophy of all lower leg compartments, plus quad & glute atrophy same side
-post cast movements allowed were plantarflexion and Doris flexion of ankle. Now version or inversion allowed
-I will keep you posted on my rehab process and take you through our rehab approach

Champions mindset:
Competition:
Learning how to compete is a skill that is separate from having talent, working hard, and being a great practice player. Many times the people that look the best in practice never end up winning competitions because they never learn HOW to compete. Competition goes beyond your physical skills and abilities, the best competitors bring a mindset that not only transfers their physical skills and abilities into the competition but then takes it a step further and elevates them beyond anything they’ve ever done in practice. Part of being a great competitor is shutting off all the worries, concerns, wants, don’t wants, other competitors, how you look, and just being in the moment and doing what you love, and being in a flow state of mind. Flow means we are in the moment, and everything happens in slow motion, we are able to predict what happens ahead of time, there is a deep sense of calm and peace and connection with our bodies and a oneness with the world around us.

Specific Assessment=Specific Plan=Specific Results=Better Results

Regardless of your goals, the quality of the initial assessment will determine the quality of the results achieved (assuming patient compliance is 100%, which is another topic for another day). Our assessment involves gathering very specific information about your joints and their related tissues (muscles and nerves) as it relates to your loading and thus energy requirements for your life. What we are trying to understand in an assessment is what loading capacity do your joints have, what loading capacity do you need for your life, and if there is a gap between what your requirements are and what your current capacity is, what do we need to do to bridge that gap. Of course, when you load tissues greater than your tissue tolerance you will always end up with an injury. Once we understand your load capacity:requirement ratio, and we know which tissues specifically are affected we set out a specific treatment plan. That specific treatment plan will almost always involve both ACTIVE and PASSIVE treatment components. The bottom line is this: with anything we do in life we need to assess the situation, determine the problems (load capacity:requirement ratio, injured tissues), create a plan, and of course execute that plan, and reassess, make new decisions, replan, re-execute. This is the formula we use, and remember if you want specific results you need a specific assessment. DM me if this approach resonates with you.

FUNCTIONAL MOBILITY of the hip for Injury Prevention and Performance. What is functional mobility? It is NOT the same as flexibility! It is the ability to actively achieve a range of motion for the functions you need to perform. It is determined by your flexibility AND strength/control through that range of motion. The more strength and control you have through your range of motion the greater the resultant protection of the joint and performance of that joint through THAT particular range of motion. In the first picture I’m working on hip internal rotation flexibility and in the second picture I combine the passive stretch with the active strength and control of internal rotation. There very particular reasons to address internal rotation of the hip before we can access other movements of the hip. Anyone that has knee and low back injuries or any athletes should know just how important hip mobility is for health and performance. =flexibility+strength =performance
