What if we told you that stretching may be hindering you from finally getting relief from your sciatic pain?

Let's ponder this one question, do nerves STRETCH....?

They DO NOT!

We are often told to stretch to "loosen" up the area and relax "tight" muscles constraining the sciatic nerve.

Quick anatomy lesson!

The sciatic nerve is in a precarious spot. The piriformis muscle, located in close proximity to the sciatic nerve, can be blamed for sciatic irritation. Often stretches are given to "release" or loosen the piriformis to try and relieve the tension.

The approach certainly works for some. But what about the many others that don't quite find the relief they are looking for?

Reverse Stretching could be the Answer!

What came first, the chicken or the egg? I know, an old question. But when we are talking about the body, this age old question comes to the forefront.

What do we all dislike and wish we could fix with our bodies? Pain and weakness are at the top of the list for many. But which came first?!

This is a detailed topic that I won't bore you on. What I can say for certain is that there is a direct connection between skeletal muscle weakness and unwanted sensations (aka PAIN).

Now, of course there are situations where there are other physiological factors at play that can lead to pain. BUT, a large majority can be linked to a lack of strength and function of our muscles.

What is one area that has a high affinity for this?

The Neck!

How common is strength training specifically for the neck? Unfortunately, not common enough. Why is this?!

A few thoughts come to mind.

#1 It is not a "standard" way of exercising. What I mean is that you likely wouldn't walk into a gym and find people doing neck exercises, let alone a proper piece of equipment to safely and effectively use for the task.

#2 For many, the neck is the last thing they would feel comfortable exercising! Not knowing what to do or how to do it makes it easy to avoid. Unfortunately this just furthers the problem.
