This patient suffered a severe trauma to her face and orbit resulting in the loss of her eye, as well as a part of her lower eyelid. Sometimes cases like these take a little longer than usual but with time and patience, the outcome can be life changing!

This patient has an enucleated socket and has been wearing a prosthesis for almost her whole life. Painting this ocular prosthesis was a lot of fun, she has many different tones in her Iris! 🤗

It’s new conformer day!! 😃

Unilateral Anophthalmia is a condition when a baby is born without an eye. A series of conformers that increase in size will be used to expand the socket as the baby grows to help promote orbital growth.

We are working with York University's Perceptual Neuroscience Lab and they are looking for patients to participate in their research study!

This study is to help us better understand how visual and auditory perception has changed over time in people who have had one eye removed after the age of 5.

When an ocular prosthesis is painted in our office we use a red thread to replicate the veins on the sclera of the eye. In our opinion it gives these prostheses a very realistic representation!

Hello!

We would like to take a moment to express our thanks to everyone who have been diligently complying with our office and building COVID-19 protocols. This truly helps keep our door open so we can continuously serve our patients.

We know it is a challenging time for many, and we appreciate your support and patience as we deal with the complex and fluid nature of this global pandemic.

& just a friendly reminder of our COVID-19 protocols:

• Facemask covering the nose, mouth, and chin is mandatory in our office at all times, as per city bylaw
• Guests are limited to 1 (one) per person, only if necessary
• Our building is restricted to the public and can only be accessed through the main door on University Ave.
You will not be able to use the elevators on your own. Please call our office once you are inside the lobby and our staff will meet you there
• If you arrive early, you may be asked to wait until your appointment time in order to allow us to properly and thoroughly sanitize the room
• If you have symptoms of COVID-19, have been in contact with someone who is sick, have travelled outside of Canada within the last 14 days, please postpone your appointment
• You will be asked to complete a COVID-19 screening questionnaire and temperature check upon arrival

A brave story from a wonderful patient. Thank you for sharing your experience with so many 🙏

"I’m learning to be open in speaking about my disability, but it has been a journey. When I was still in university, my left eye was injured in a random accident.. After six years and seven operations, doctors told me I'd need to have the eye removed. I ended up with a prosthetic.

I struggled to process the accident and outcome, which affected me both physically and mentally. I felt isolated. In addition to the challenges caused by relying on one eye, such as eye strain and limited peripheral vision, I also have anxiety that people might notice my prosthetic.

Finding the courage to go to therapy and being open about my condition has led to self-acceptance. I’ve realized the more I talk about my experience, the more people are open in return. Working at CIBC, my managers and colleagues have been incredibly supportive.

This journey empowered me to support others with visual impairments, giving me a sense of purpose. I'm an advocate for the Canadian National Institution of the Blind (CNIB), and passionate about working to break down stigmas against those with visual disabilities."
