Repetitive, negative speech habits can be grating or annoying to your listeners. But the good news is that you can get rid of them!

The first step to changing is to identify YOUR habits.

Ask yourself the following:

🙋🏻‍♀️Do you say - "Um" "Like" "So" or "You Know" too many times in a conversation or presentation?

🙋🏻‍♀️Do you speak with "up" tone or a " down" tone at the end of a sentence?

🙋🏻‍♀️Do you mumble or talk under your breath?

🙋🏻‍♀️Is your conversational pace - slow, too fast, or just right?

Once you recognize your negative habits, we can start work on changing those - together!

Let's talk about overcoming negative speech habits! https://speechscience.com/contact

You've been preparing for the big presentation. You have the data and the charts together. But you're worried if anyone will really listen to what you have to say.

With 'dry' subjects or if you have to convey a lot of numbers or data, it's especially important that what you say is relevant, interesting, and dare I say - exciting.

-Make it interesting to the listener.
What would be interesting to the listener? Can you use examples, case studies, or anecdotes to make the subject more interesting ?

-Stay relevant to your listener.
Does your presentation content apply to the meeting attendees? What kind of connections can you make from your subject matter to their role? Listeners want to know- why should this matter to me?

-Make your content exciting.
Practice using different tones of voice and pauses. Convey excitement through your voice and strategically use silence to have the audience waiting for what you're going to say next.

You can prevent wandering minds and people playing with their phones while you're talking, by planning your content in advance and making it interesting, relevant, and exciting.

Looking for help with your next presentation? Let's talk: https://speechscience.com/contact

Why do people try to change their accent?

Contrary to what many believe, accent reduction is not aimed at making people lose their native accent. An accent is something you should be proud of - it shows you are able to speak more than one language.

Accent reduction or accent modification is important because it allows you to sound strong, clear, and confident when you speak, and be clearly understood by others.

Accent modification can help reduce miscommunication, and assist in many areas including job interviews, presentation, and promotion negotiation.

Want to learn more about what accent modification entails? Send me a message and let's talk!

Accents are a part of who we are. It shows people that you are bilingual or trilingual - you should be proud of your accent and your abilities.

However, I also believe that you don't want to have mispronunciation barriers get in the way of your communication.

Do you aim to learn how to speak so that your English is clear and confident?

Here are a few tips that can help you be understood the first time you speak:

• Pronounce the consonant sounds of English clearly (‘TH’ ‘V’ ‘W’ ‘R’ ‘L’)
• Practice the rhythm and flow of the words and the sentences
• Breathe out and project your voice

Are you able to refuse an offer politely yet confidently?

As the end of the work week rolls around, many of us miss the social aspect of the workplace, yet still remain cautious about social distancing.

What do you say when a coworker says “let's do lunch” but you are not ready to dine indoors yet?

Make the person feel like you want to accept this offer, but be confident in saying how you feel in terms of your comfort.

Try something along the lines of:

“I can’t wait to have lunch with you, I’m just not comfortable right now. Let’s make a future date”

Have you had to reject an offer? How do you ensure that you are respectful yet assured?

Top tip: Use this technique to be heard the first time you speak

Over this past year, the sentence "can you hear me?" might have been one of the most common phrases.

Both virtually and in-person (such as when wearing a mask) sound can get muffled, making it hard to be understood.

Communicating efficiently requires proper pronunciation. Want to feel heard the first time you speak? Try this strategy:

- Speak a little slower
- Project your voice
- Pronounce the consonant sounds of English

Welcome to the new normal!

How do you show people that you want to talk to them in this new phase?

When we wear a mask in person or speak virtually, it can be hard to show charisma and enthusiasm.

Here are some tips for speaking with presence and charisma, both virtually and in person:

• Focus on using more up & down tone than you normally use
• Express emotions such as happiness with your eyes
• Use your hands and head to communicate through body language

Last week, I asked what people find more challenging to deal with during online presentations - keeping the audience engaged versus avoiding filler words such as “um”. Interestingly, the majority of voters struggled with the first option more. This goes to show that many of us face common problems when presenting online.

When speaking virtually, new distractions and challenges arise that are not prevalent during in-person meetings. We can find it equally difficult to be heard and to hear our audience. Let’s try this poll again with some new options. What has challenged you more through this shift to the virtual workplace?

Option 1: Lack of non-verbal communication
Option 2: Losing the audience's attention

Zoom fatigue is real.

The shift from in-person to virtual or hybrid workplaces has had monumental effects on how we communicate. Suddenly, we find that we are missing out on many aspects of non-verbal communication. Facial expressions, tone and pitch, and even posture all play a role in the message we aim to convey. We have to work much harder to get our point across, searching for new methods to present and express ourselves.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. In my new course “Speaking Virtually - With Presence and Charisma!”, I focus on teaching you how to undergo the psychological shift to virtual communication. You will learn the secrets of effective virtual communication including how to:

- Sound effective and persuasive
