Self-Kindness, Common Humanity & Mindfulness

Research shows that individuals with greater self-compassion experience lower levels of anxiety, depression, and shame, while demonstrating increased emotional resilience. Self-compassion is not about avoiding responsibility, feigning positivity, or lowering standards for ourselves. It is about being a supportive guide to ourselves. Amy Appelle wrote a wonderful blog expanding on this which you can read by clicking here: https://www.counsellingtorontoteens.com/kind-self-talk/

Behavioural Activation Helps with Big Emotions

Having a pleasant activities list is not about ignoring your feelings or pretending that everything is fine. It is about acknowledging the thoughts, feelings and physical sensations you are experiencing in the moment and then intentionally choosing an activity that might lift your mood, calm your body or help your mind think more clearly. Engaging in an activity off your pleasant activities list is an act of self-care and self-compassion in response to mindfully noticing the painful feelings you’re experiencing.

Laura Gongora expands on this in her blog which you can read by clicking here: https://www.counsellingtorontoteens.com/when-your-emotions-feel-too-big/

Truth and Reconciliation day signifies the importance of learning more about the Indigenous people's struggle, history, and the generational impacts that are still occurring today. It is imperative to not turn the other way but to stand with the Indigenous people in overcoming systemic barriers, standing for their rights, and uplifting the Indigenous community in the ways that we have power to do so. The final release of the summary of the Truth and Reconciliation report released in 2015 details the impacts of the residential school systems, loss of identity, and social barriers. We have included the link below to the summary report as well as the report that outlines 94 calls to action. Both the education and action part are necessary in mobilizing the work needed to be active members in creating the truth and reconciliation that we wish to stand for.

Toronto Counselling Centre for Teens

We at the Toronto Counselling Centre for Teens are passionate about teens. We love their energy, promise and ingenuity. The teenage years can be confusing, vulnerable and sometimes even volatile. We feel that it is an incredible honour to help a teen navigate those years, heal, grow, shift perspectives and shift relationships.

We believe that our work with teens is strategic: an investment in teens is an investment in the overall well-being of our communities. Successful counselling with teens gives each young person the opportunity to live the rest of their life released from significant internal struggle. Equipping youth to be healthy and hopeful friends, leaders, colleagues, partners and parents in their future adult life is our mission. We believe (and research indicates) that investment in this work, now, benefits the individual teen both now and in the future, as they grow into adulthood and participation in their own families and community contexts.
