Healthy Living With Nick and Connor

Healthy Living With Nick and Connor We are two friends who love learning about health, trying out what we learn, and sharing the info with anyone who will listen.

We are not your typical experts, in fact we are not experts. What we are are two guys—an emergency room doctor, and a dad/firefighter— who enjoy wading through the murky waters of the health world, and providing you with the most important, actionable, and user friendly information possible so we can all try and lead healthier lives.

Teach kids how to build a proper nutritious meal by explaining that each meal should be focused on important nutrients like protein and fibre. If we don’t teach our kids about the importance of nutrient-rich foods, and how to make sure we are eating healthy, when will they learn? Ask them to come up with breakfast, lunch, and dinner ideas. Help them out by teaching them what possible proteins to focus on with each meal, and how to incorporate fibre with different vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. Try recipes from different countries and get creative with how you help your children get interested in food. The messier kitchen will be worth it when you start seeing your kids not only eat healthier, but hearing them talk to others about the important aspects of nutrition. Read to your kids. Read with your kids. Read in front of your kids when you are hanging out. This will breed curious children, this will instill a love of reading in them, and this genuine interest in reading will last forever. You may ask how this applies to health. Reading books and studies about health is one of the best ways to learn, so let’s all help our children live healthier lives by helping them grow a love of reading and learning 🏄

We all need to face challenges in life to grow, and kids are no different. We have all seen our kids struggle in the face of adversity, a challenge, something difficult. You can see it in their faces as they process the fact that they are not good at something, or something is too hard. These are the exact situations we want our kids in. Doing hard things should be something they WANT to do in order to grow. Our job as adults is to nurture their interests and help them face challenges so they will be able to face challenges head on for the rest of their lives 🏄

In our busy lives it can be hard to make time to get down on the floor and play with your kids, or be silly and run through a forest with your kids pretending you are running away from monsters. These may be some of the most important moments for both you and your kids. Say YES more often. Not only will you be improving your connection with your kids, but you will be fostering healthier lives for both you and your kids. We aren’t saying you should do this all day long, but can you set aside 5, 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes a day where you can just be fully present with your kids moving like a kid with your kids? The lifelong benefits will be immense for your health, your children’s health, and for your connection. Have fun, be silly, move like a kid with your kids.

Starting your kids day off with a nutritious meal is so important for them to have energy throughout the day. Think of protein filled breakfasts like these shown in the video. Join your kids in these protein filled breakfasts and this will leave the whole family feeling energized for the day 🏄

Quality sleep and energy levels throughout the day are so important for all of us to feel our best during the day. This is especially important for kids as their bodies and brains are constantly growing. Morning sunlight is incredibly helpful for improving energy throughout the day, and improving your sleep at night. Morning sunlight sets your body’s internal clock (your circadian rhythm) in order to have proper cortisol levels and sustained energy levels through the day, along with getting your body ready for sleep at night. This is an easy 5 minute health recipe we can all do. Get morning sunlight with your kids and see everyone’s moods and sleep improve 🏄

Hi everyone, important message today: teaching your kids how to de-stress in the moment. Slower controlled breathing is the absolute fastest way to de-stress in the moment and avoid frustration, lashing out, anger, and a myriad of other responses. All you need to do is a big inhale through your nose, long exhale through your mouth with tight lips like you are drinking from a straw, and repeat until you start to feel calmer. Amplify this with a double inhale through your nose before the long exhale through your mouth. Check out the physiological sigh that Dr. Andrew Huberman teaches. Help your kids, and we can all start tackling stress in better, healthier ways.
