April 7 is World Health Day and this year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science,” is not just a moment to reaffirm our commitment to evidence-based care rooted in clinical excellence; it reflects how we approach care every day.

Advancing health relies on a shared commitment across the medical and research communities. And at Medcan, we’re proud to contribute thoughtfully to that collective effort, from the daily impact we make in the lives of our clients to broader clinical advancements.

In just the past year, we’ve advanced proactive health in multiple ways:

✅Published our findings on hs‑Troponin, a key biomarker that can help predict cardiac events before they happen, in the Journal of Cardiology

✅Brought the Galleri® test by GRAIL – the most extensively studied multi‑cancer early detection test – to Canada

✅Evolved our flagship Annual Health Assessment, by adding advanced biomarkers such as the heart indicators Lp(a) and ApoB, along with early indicators of metabolic dysfunction that include fasting insulin, HOMA‑IR, and uric acid

✅Introduced APOE genetic testing, connected with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and heart health, as a standalone service

✅Advanced conversations and support for evidence-based menopause care by speaking at the National Menopause Show and through our integrated, specialized, physician-led Menopause and Perimenopause Program

✅Continued to support clients with a responsible, integrated approach to GLP‑1 medications with our comprehensive Weight Management Program

✅Shared evidence-based insights in leading HR and employer forums to help further proactive employee health practices and encourage healthier workplaces

In honour of World Health Day, we encourage everyone to prioritize their health, however possible. Move daily, follow healthy eating patterns, get quality sleep, and manage stress. And for a truly evidence-based, personalized approach, assess and monitor your biomarkers – key measurements like cholesterol, glucose levels and muscle mass, that provide objective insight into your current wellness and future risks.

This data can help you identify risks, prioritize action and make informed health decisions. And beyond that, when each of us engages in data‑driven prevention, those actions add up, leading to more collective insights and strengthening health for all.

Visit medcan.com/insights to discover more about these advances and read trusted guidance from our experts to help you prioritize your health.

We are proud to share that the Galleri® test, which sets the standard for multi-cancer early detection, is now available across Ontario.

The Galleri test is a single blood draw that screens for 50+ cancer types, including aggressive types like pancreatic and ovarian, before they become symptomatic.*

As the official Canadian provider of the Galleri test, Medcan provides testing at our Toronto, Oakville, and Collingwood locations. Now, we have expanded access across Ontario, offering the flexibility to complete your blood draw in the convenience of your home or at a local blood collection centre.

However you choose to complete your blood draw, Medcan will be with you every step of the way. Our clinical team will guide you through the testing process and help you navigate your results.

The earlier you detect health issues like cancer, the sooner you can act.

Learn more about how we are expanding access across Ontario and book your appointment at https://medcan.com/galleri-locations/

*The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers. Not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur.

You’ve likely heard about GLP-1 medications, even if you’ve never taken them.

Today, GLP‑1 medications are part of everyday conversations. You’re likely to know someone who takes one – or you may be wondering whether you should.

They are part of a new era in weight loss science, and one of the most talked‑about developments in modern health care.

But how do you know if a GLP‑1 is right for you?

At Medcan, our physicians walk clients through GLP-1 benefits, risks, and considerations every day to support evidence-informed decision-making. So, this month we interviewed three of them: a globally recognized leader in obesity, a diabetes specialist, and a medical senior leader who is one of our Dedicated Care physicians.

To stay informed and for clear, credible insights read our latest guide: GLP‑1s, from a doctor’s lens: what they do, who should consider them, and what’s next.

When it comes to heart health, did you know your daily routine plays an important role?

According to new insights from the American Heart Association, circadian rhythm – your body’s 24‑hour internal clock – influences your cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Habits like late‑night screen time, irregular sleep, varied work hours, and eating late can throw your internal clock off – and increase your risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The good news? Small, realistic schedule tweaks can make a big difference.

To find out just how your daily routine can impact your health, and five ways you can positively impact this cycle, read our latest insights article: How circadian rhythm is linked to better heart health here.

David hadn't taken a thorough look at his health in years. So, when he heard about Medcan's Annual Health Assessment, his first thought was 'no thanks'.

But curiosity – and encouragement from his family – won out. At 76, David decided to take a closer look at his health. And what he discovered surprised him.

In a single day, David was tested for over 100+ biomarkers, receiving personalized insights that changed the course of how he manages his health.

From better sleep to smarter nutrition and fitness habits, he now feels stronger in body and mind.

His advice? “Don’t prejudge. Those five hours at the clinic were the fastest I’ve spent. It’s worth it.”

Like many clients, David learned that those five hours were time savings. He did numerous tests in one day with no need to wait for separate imaging appointments or do blood work in advance. He met with multiple health professionals, including a doctor – all in one visit.

As David learned, awareness is the first step to lifelong health.

Know your numbers. Make informed changes. Live well, for life.

When you think of assessing your health, there might be one powerful biomarker you’re overlooking: Grip strength.

Grip strength reflects overall muscle health and is a key marker for biological aging. In fact, a recent study from the Journal of Sport and Health sciences analyzing grip strength data from 2.4 million+ people across 69 countries established grip strength as a global health biomarker.

Why? Low grip strength is associated with:
✔️ Sarcopenia - the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength
✔️ Cardiovascular disease
✔️ Type 2 diabetes
✔️ Cognitive decline
✔️ Poor recovery after surgery

👉 Want to know if you're in the healthy range for grip strength? Tap the link here to read our latest article, Grip strength: A powerful predictor of full-body health: https://bit.ly/3NfGpxc. Find out how to test and get your number!

Talent Spotlight: Dr. Darren Larsen 🩺

After 14 years in a major downtown teaching hospital, Dr. Darren Larsen made a big change. He joined Medcan’s Year-Round Care team in Collingwood and Muskoka.

He wasn’t sure what to expect – no residents, no students, and a whole new patient community. But he came with an open mind and a goal to reignite his passion for medicine.

And now? He’s clear that he made the right choice. In his recent editorial on our site, he shared:

"When I leave the clinic at the end of my shifts, I feel like one of the luckiest people on earth...I work in a clinic that supports me because it supports patients so well. I feel reconnected to my community. Every day I receive heartfelt thank-yous..I feel proud of my work – and proud of everyone I work alongside."

One of the biggest challenges to staying active during the holidays? Time.

Here’s a science-backed tip: to stay on track with your fitness goals, try snacking...on exercise!

Short bursts of movement – just a few minutes at a time – can help you maintain fitness and boost your health.

A recent meta-analysis in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine found that these “exercise snacks” improve VO₂ max, blood pressure, waist size, and cholesterol when done regularly.

How to snack on exercise:

✅ Aim for 2–3 mini sessions per day

✅ Choose 2–3 moves from our list of options (or speak with your fitness trainer)

✅ Make it fun

You don’t even need a gym or equipment, just creativity and a few minutes!

Squeeze in some reps while you wait for a coffee to brew. Or, when you notice you’ve been sitting at your desk for long spurts, slip in a mid-day exercise snack for a quick boost of energy.

Tap the link in bio for our Medcan experts’ top “activity snacks” to keep your holidays healthy.
