The theme of this year’s CMHA Mental Health Week, May 5-11, is unmasking mental health.
This theme encourages us to take a courageous step to remove the masks we wear to suppress our true selves, including our emotions, personality traits, behaviors, or symptoms. While masks can serve a purpose, they can be detrimental when it comes to supporting our mental wellbeing.
Medcan’s Jennifer Baldachin, MSW, shares, “As a social worker, I've witnessed firsthand how often we wear masks—smiles to hide anxiety, productivity that masks burnout, and silence that conceals pain. The effects of the mask are emotionally and physically draining.”
To help reduce the weight of the mask, Baldachin invites us to start with vulnerability and honesty with ourselves and those we trust. This first step opens the door to self-compassion and helps build connections with others.
Swipe for more insights and suggestions from Baldachin to help navigate this process.
Mental wellbeing is critical to your overall health, so this is an important reminder to take care of it as part of your journey to live well, for life.
