Maternal health outcomes for Black women can be improved with better access to health care, prenatal care, and advocacy. To recognize Toronto Black Maternal Health Week 2026, NYG is hosting Practitioner Day on April 13 in partnership with Black Physicians of Canada and the Black Physicians' Association of Ontario -BPAO to examine disparities that persist in Black maternal health and identify actions to improve equity in care.

As Canada’s number one community academic hospital according to Newsweek, removing barriers for underserved groups and working closely with diverse communities to understand their needs and bridge care gaps in a key part of our transformational 10-year strategic plan.

The moment we have been working toward is here. On March 3, 2026, Dr. Abheha Satkunaratnam and his team completed the very first surgery using our new da Vinci robot at North York General— a remarkable achievement made possible because of donor support. We captured a few highlights in the OR.

North York General is entering a new era of surgical excellence! We’ve expanded our Robotic Assisted Surgery Program to offer patients more minimally invasive procedures involving fewer complications and faster recoveries.

Thanks to our amazing donors, we recently acquired a new da Vinci XI robotic-assisted surgical system so our surgeons can operate with greater precision, dexterity, and visibility. We’ve also added another state-of-the-art ROSA Knee system to improve accuracy and consistency in knee replacement surgeries.

To help celebrate, we partnered with Logics Academy to welcome students from Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute for a firsthand look at how robotic technology is shaping modern care. The experience was also an opportunity to address general hesitation about robotic-assisted surgery, with some studies showing 7 in 10 people feeling uneasy about robotic surgery—even though patients who experience it report high satisfaction and faster recovery.

The students connected with our surgeons and operating room teams for a hands-on experience and learned about careers in health care.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making this day a success, including our amazing donors for supporting our robotic program!
