North York General follows a seasonal approach to masking. With seasonal respiratory virus activity winding down, we’re updating our mask policy.

Starting February 23, visitors will no longer be required to wear a mask in patient care areas.

NYG will remain a mask-friendly environment and masking will remain optional in all areas unless specified otherwise. Mask dispensers will continue to be available for those who need them at our ED entrance, in the south lobby near the elevators at the General site, and in our clinical areas.

Over 11,000 emergency visits in a single month. That’s the level of demand North York General’s Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency department sees during peak periods.

That’s why we’re introducing SmartER Zones—a new AI initiative that uses real-time data to help nurses identify patients waiting longer than expected and move them into care spaces sooner, reducing wait times and supporting earlier treatment.

We had a great time celebrating Lunar New Year and welcoming the Year of the Horse! Our team members enjoyed traditional Chinese dance performances and took part in festive activities including red envelop exchanges, lantern painting, calligraphy and tasting delicious treats.

Thank you to NYG’s Asian and Pacific Islander Social Committee (APISC) for organizing this event and and the Multicultural & Folk Arts Association of Canada for bringing this celebration to life.

Wishing our community a year filled with health, happiness, and prosperity!

Congratulations to Monika Kastner, PhD, NYG’s Research Chair in Knowledge Translation, on receiving a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) project grant!

Her research will focus on deepening our understanding of social frailty in older adults and help develop interventions to support priority populations. Social frailty is a state of vulnerability due to loss of social resources or abilities and is the least understood form of frailty in older adults.
