This is your cue to reach out now! You deserve the well-being this can bring to you!
I offer individual counselling for children and parents as well as family counselling for families with children up to 12 years of age. If you are struggling as a parent or are feeling ready to explore the impact of intergenerational cycles on your parenting, I am a call away. Here's what we can do:

1. You can call or email me to book a 15-minute free consult.
2. The 15-minute consult is a fit-check. We discuss your needs and my offering to see if we would be a good fit.
3. You decide if and when you would like to start having regular full sessions.
4. We create a plan with your needs and goals.
5. We are on the roll!
This is your process towards healing and being a more connected parent.

Dealing with emotionally immature parents is exhausting. Maybe you have decided to go low or no-contact to protect your energy. Or maybe you speak to them and often find yourself in strange arguments or awkward situations, leaving you hurt or angry or frustrated. In either case, your older children might have, unintendedly, picked on the awkward energy and tension between you and your parents. However, we don't want them to feel lost, confused, and find their own meanings and conclusions. These messages can help keep doors of communication open and channelise them better.

Hello there! I am Bhakti Shah, a registered social worker in Ontario, Canada, with a background in child development and over 16 years of experience working with children and families. I am here for parents who would like support in the realm of parenting children as young as newborns up to 12 years of age. Parenting can be tricky, and I am here to make it as easy as possible.
Today, I am inspired to share the meaning behind my practice name, "Ekya Counselling & Psychotherapy Services." As with every entrepreneur, I also wanted the name to reflect the values I espoused in my practice. At the same time, I wanted it to reflect my cultural origin and the deepest crevice my professional efforts stem from. I think it does justice, and I hope I was able to word it in a way that you think so, too! Thank you for reading.
I provide virtual services across Ontario and in-person appointments in Brampton. Link to book a free 15-minute consult is in my bio. Or you can reach out on bhakti@ekyapsychotherapy.ca

No matter the child's age, this is just the basic design of this relationship! Parents do not oblige by giving, and the giving is never supposed to be conditional. Children are supposed to just rest in taking and thrive in the knowing of their parent's unconditional love. Eventually, children may be naturally inspired to start giving (by taking care of parents, getting protective, supporting parents in ways they need, etc), but they should never be burdened to. However, emotionally immature parents don't get this. There is a constant expectation to be responsible for the parent's needs and happiness. If this is you, please know that it should never have been and is not your burden to take.

It's that simple.

"This is her 3rd week, and she still cries!" I could sense bewilderment (and slight disappointment) in the way my child's very well-meaning daycare educator said that about one of the other children in the classroom who was glued to her and crying incessantly 😢 "Your child cries for a few minutes but is very good after that." While that relieves me personally as a mother, it made me think if the comparison really matters!
There can be no timeline to how long a child can/will take to adjust to that big transition! Each child is different and has so many variables attached to them. Just letting go off of the home environment is hard enough, add to that a new environment, people and scattered attention.
The educators comment got me thinking and reflecting how many times I hear the same statement from my parent clients. When people who are experts in childcare say these things, no wonder it gets to us! I just ask you to stop letting it affect the expectations you build for your child and for yourself. Your child is not strange or "too something" if they are taking a while. All they are authentically asking for is more care, connection, patience, and time. Feel free to advocate for your child to have this for as long as it takes for them to feel utterly safe and comfortable!

When external situations such as bullying, schoolwork, peer pressure, adjusting to transitions or life changes, exposure to unsafe situations, a tough teacher, a disappointment at a game, and just about any stress hits your child, no mattertheir age, they tend to feel lost and shaken. While they are still making sense of themselves, this world and everything within, the one person that can make things slightly easier to navigate, would be YOU, their loving parent. You and your unconditional love and support are their anchor.
