Technology is far from benign for any brain, but there are particular concerns associated with the effects of technology use on the developing brain, like those of toddlers, children, and teenagers.

Everything from the effects of specific devices (e.g., smart phones, tablets, laptops), the type of content (violence, s*xual, gaming, social media), the amount of use, to the time of use is on the research table.

Researchers are trying to determine how all of this is affecting the brains, mental health, social development, attention, relationships, emotions, etc. So far, the research is suggesting that we should be very concerned, in ways not previously detected with other technologies (i.e., it’s not the same as being on TV or on the phone all day in the 80s or 90s.)

Join Dr. Mandy Wintink, Behavioural Neuroscientist, as they share the latest on the research, while also encouraging a non-judgmental environment of problem solving. They believe that a group effort is required to tackle this massive societal problem and working together as parents, grandparents, and all caregivers without judgment is what is needed.

We have another free live discussion coming up! Dr. Mandy Wintink will be discussing gut health for healthy minds and brains.

The gut-brain axis, as it is known, is the biological connection between the brain and the digestive system.

Only in the past decade have neuroscientists really begun to unravel to important role that a healthy gut plays in a growing list of cognitive and neurological conditions, including mental illnesses (Depression, Bipolor Disorder), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis), and developmental disabilities (e.g., Autism).

Much of the research has lead to a deeper understanding of the microbiome, the good bacteria that populate the gut lining and help with a whole host of functions like digestion, detoxifcation, and immune function.

It is now clearer than ever that what and how we eat has consequences for how we think, feel, and behave. In this way, a healthy gut can support a healthy minds and brains.

Neurodiversity: Neurodiversity emerged as a political and societal movement to embrace the experiences associated with Autism as representing a natural and beautiful spectrum of human diversity.

Since then, the term neurodiversity has been picked up to honour the important and valuable differences with other diagnoses like ADHD and Learning Disabilities, among others.

In this online session, Dr. Mandy Wintink will cover the basics of what neurodiversity is and highlight some of the known advantages and benefits of the neurodivergent brain. Register using the link in our bio!

Technology’s constant interruptions, precisely-targeted distractions, and design features are taking a toll on our ability to think, to focus, to solve problems, to be present with each other, and regulate our emotions.

They work on an existing fear and threat-alerting system an activates the amygdala of the brain.

By reviewing and changing your habits, using the settings on your devices and consciously consuming content, you can reduce the harm that our devices cause.

Self Science takes the study of the brain out of the laboratory and into the light. After years of seeing how evidence-based practices ignore the individual and fall into generalizations, Dr. Mandy Wintink decided there had to be another way. Looking beyond her training in traditional neuroscience, she embarked on a journey to better understand the way her own brain works and discovered a holistic understanding that put the individual back in focus. With this book, she tells that story and empowers her readers to do the same.
