“Core” has become a buzzword in the fitness realm, but it’s often misunderstood. Core is far more than just the abdominals and the misconception of holding your stomach in. In Pilates, people think that working the core should be doing ab curls or exercises they feel a burn because they’re use to “feeling” the superficial muscles.

Core strength is more than visible abs. True core strength goes deep, literally.

Your core is a dynamic support system that wraps around your entire torso, from hips to shoulders and comprises of two essential layers working together:

1. Deep core (inner cylinder): diaphragm, pelvic floor, transverse abdominis, and multifidi. These muscles create a vacuum pack to support the spine.

2. Superficial core (outer cylinder): gluteal, obliques, latissimus dorsi, and back extensors are a few. These muscles generate power and mobilize the body.

When we only train the superficial core muscles (visible six pack), we can miss the deeper support our bodies truly need — sometimes leading to stiffness, poor posture, restricted breathing, and even pain at times.

Here’s the secret 🔑 Superficial core strength is dependent on deep core support. Therefore, true core strength comes from training both layers. And deep core training care feel subtle at first, requiring patience and practice.

But when both core layers work in sync, the result is powerful:

✨optimal core strength
✨improved posture
✨improved breathing
✨fluid hip and shoulder movement
✨full-range, pain-free spinal movement

Training both layers of the core is one of the many reasons to include Pilates in your movement routine. 🫶 It’s a primary focus here in our classes and one-on-ones.
