The Kyla Fox Centre

The Kyla Fox Centre The Kyla Fox Centre is the first of its kind private eating disorder recovery centre in Toronto. to help manage and overcome the food/body symptoms.

At the Centre, we follow a two-pronged approach to recovering from an imbalanced relationship with food and the body. This includes clinical therapy, to unpack and work through the roots of the self-harm, as well as holistic healing (naturopathy, integrative medicine, nutrition, reiki, art therapy, yoga, etc.) We offer an individualized program for each client, and tailor it to them depending on t

heir specific needs and symptoms. We provide a full spectrum of treatment ranging from those who require the upmost intensive treatment program (6 days per week, 10 hours per day), through to those who have established more stability in recovery and therefore require work around transitioning back into life/relapse prevention.

Even Athletes Aren't Immune to Eating Disorders: New research reveals the high prevalence of eating disorders within the fitness realm. The study identifies five predominant traits within the sports setting that complicate the diagnosis and recognition of these disorders. These include:

➡️Dietary regulation
➡️Control over body weight
➡️Training fixation
➡️Management of appetite
➡️Calorie tracking

Let's reframe our view of movement - see it as a tool to promote health and wellbeing, not something to be beholden to. A balanced lifestyle should be the ultimate goal where exercise, diet, relaxation, and rest all have their place. Make a plan that covers all these areas.

Think beyond the food and the body when it comes to eating disorder behaviours.
Notice the ways that binge, purge and restrict live in your life, in your relational patterns, in the ways you navigate the world, your feelings, your work, your sense of self.

Eating disorders run deep. They show up in food and the body at the surface, yes, but that is a manifestation of what is actually a way bigger story about the harm.

Recovery requires us to do more than change our thinking about, and our behaviours with, food and our body. It requires us to look at the ways this shows up in our lives, too, and to face that in our healing.

Post in the comments where you might notice binge, purge, and restrict in your own life!

Don't underestimate how the eating disorder is built on food AND life symptoms.

It's impossible to separate the two - you can't - they're intertwined together, which is what makes an eating disorder so imprisoning.

Notice what you do with food and consider how this may show up in your life. Notice what you do in life and consider how this may show up in your food.

Remember that recovery is not one dimensional. Suffering is layered and so, too, is healing.

Comment below on the way(s) you notice your life AND food symptoms. Would love to hear what you're experiencing to help inspire others to see and think differently about their own healing. Please share!!

When we treat eating disorders and PTSD together, we open the door for long-term recovery.

Evidence proves the powerful link between these conditions – a traumatic past can often amplify the severity of an ED. By exploring this intersection, we are pioneering a path for more comprehensive treatment strategies. Together, we can revolutionize healing.

The Canadian healthcare system must rise to the challenge.

As a Whitby, ON, family ventures south of the border, they're not just seeking treatment for their anorexic teen; they're igniting an important conversation. Our system needs to integrate comprehensive mental health support with clinical stability – every adolescent deserves it. It's time for change.

Sometimes, our battles are more intertwined than we think.

New research underscores the profound impact trauma therapy can have on eating disorder recovery. With up to 50% of individuals struggling with eating disorders also battling PTSD, it's high time we integrate trauma therapy into recovery programs. Real-world studies are revealing how this approach significantly aids those entangled in both PTSD and eating disorders. It's time to redefine healing, one holistic approach at a time.

Daily reminder!

Don't get fooled by that eating disorder chit-chat.

Don't let those things it says to you be what you live by. Don't give in. Don't let them win. Don't make them your mantras. Not now. Not today. Not ever.

It's just eating disorder noise. And it's just trying to keep you down.

So....
This morning, rise up. Way up.
Above it. Turn that volume down. Turn this volume up:

"I don't need to hide behind an eating disorder. I am enough".

Rinse. Repeat.

All. Day. Long.

:

If you woke up and told yourself "today is
the day my diet starts", do a do-over.

Lie back down.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath.
Take a minute.
Another minute.
Another deep breath.

Make sure you're settled before you re-wake.
Your mind sets the tone for the day. Reset your mind. How about, "I'm not going to punish myself this Monday". Or, deserve to live free of dieting". Or maybe, "not this Monday,
eating disorder".

I've spent so many Monday's in my past cracking the whip of restriction only to get to so many Friday's in my past where I would "lose control". Restriction to binge. Binge to
restriction….

Instead.
It's Monday. And the only thing you're going to start is breakfast.

I'm wondering about what being recovered
means for vou.

There's so much focus on food and the body when thinking about recovery - and don't get me wrong, that's a major part of repair along the journey - but it's not everything. There's so much that being recovered means.

The ability to follow through with plans. Travelling without anxiety about your routine changing. Asking for a raise because you know you're worth it. Allowing yourself to receive and give love. Being honest. Pursuing the person you're interested in. Not swapping your purging for picking. Not leaving to binge, get high, or run, rather learning to stay in. No longer feeling badly about eating desserts or carbohydrates. Buying clothes that fit you and feeling comfortable in them. Saying "no" when you'd normally say "yes", saying "yes" when you'd normally say "no". Having a family. Laughing more. Feeling quieter in your mind.

I'd love to hear about what you all feel being recovered means to you

EDs are complex conditions that can be challenging for parents to identify and address.

The signs and symptoms can vary greatly from the stereotypical portrayals we see on TV, and many children struggle with food or body image in ways that don’t meet all the rigid criteria for an formal diagnosis

Our latest blog talks about what parents should be aware of and how families play an important role in recovery and supporting our kids through the recovery process.

I've been going to therapy on and off for most all of my adult life. As a therapist, I believe in getting on the other side of the room myself. Sometimes I've sought out therapy more intensively to move through really difficult life circumstances. Other times, just because I wanted an unbiased perspective, a place for clarity and redirection, time for me, time to vent, time to feel, heal, get real.

But going to therapy continues to still be stigmatized - that you have "problems" which is why you go, and when your "problems" end, you stop. Firstly, who doesn't have problems?! But also, that's not solely what therapy is for.

Going to therapy is beyond being in crises, it's beyond putting out fires. Though that can often be central at certain times in our healing process, therapy is equally important and deeply effective when life is calm, clear, kind. For me, it's when I've been more stable, more centred, that therapy has been most insightful and forward moving.

So! Don't just go to therapy when you have a "problem". Just go to therapy.
👍 in the comments below if you're going to therapy!

Look to others' recovery as inspiration. It's
powerful to witness people move through something you're working to do. It supports possibility and provides hope.

But you won't have the same story.

I've never known two people who have moved through their recovery in the same way. Ever. No two people do, because no two people are the same.

One of the most beautiful things about recovery is the ways that each person finds themselves through it. The ways that each person surrenders to all the truths of who they are. The ways that each person finds their own, new way.

So look to others' recovery for inspiration, yes. For possibility, yes. For hope, yes. But look within for your own journey, your own truth, your own story.

This week Ed Sheeran reminded us that not only do men experience disordered eating in high numbers, but there is no shame in opening up about it.

If you or someone you know is displaying disordered eating habits, or patterns of addiction as discussed in this article, don’t be afraid to start the conversation.

:
This is a tricky one.

I'm not against food preferences because I recognize that many people legitimately have them for health conditions, ethical and religious beliefs and such. But I also know how blurry the lines are when you have an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are built around rules and rituals and so are food preferences. And it's hard to uncover what is actually leading what. If you enter into recovery with a food preference, your work around stabilizing your relationship with food will be to uncover what this actually means for you. A lot of people come to realize that their food preference was actually their eating disorder rule and a lot of other people come to realize that their food preference was legit. In other words: you can be vegetarian and *not have* an eating disorder, and you can be vegetarian and *have* an eating disorder. That's for you to discover.

The work in recovery is developing a thoughtful and honest relationship with food, your body - with you. Creating clarity around this particular issue is key for longterm wellness and a life without rules and rituals.

Among the many misconceptions about eating disorders is the common understanding around binge eating disorder. It’s worth reminding everyone, binge eating disorder is an eating disorder. It can be as harmful to the body and as difficult to break away from as anorexia or bulimia. All patterns of disordered eating require the same sensitivity, care and support.

:

Parents!! It's so hard to know when eating disorders are creeping into your child's life and mind especially because they're so damn sneaky.

It's often when I meet with parents, the first thing they say to me is, "I don't know how we got here", or that their child was "just trying to eat healthier and now.. " or "I never knew this was going on - they always did so well in school and seemed perfectly fine".

So often the education parents receive about eating disorders (or rather people in general receive about eating disorders), is that of the more acute symptoms, classifications of specific eating disorder diagnoses, and information that is generally body-focused and food- focused. But the hidden, seemingly more normalized behaviours that most people with eating disorders actually have, don't often get talked about when eating disorders are talked about. And they need to be. Because eating disorder signs are really a lot of seemingly benign behaviours that are tied up in wellness culture and/or having "healthy", "smart" responsible" "mature" kids.

It matters to me to change the way parents understand eating disorders. Professionally and as a mom myself, I feel a great responsibility to lessen the suffering that so many children are in, and to help parents become better equipped to see what they may not know is there. I am devoted to this.
