Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario

Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario NPAO is the Professional Association representing the interests of all Nurse Practitioner specialties in Ontario

The Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO) was founded in 1973. In 1985 NPAO became an expert group of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario. In 1998 it changed its mandate to include NPs in all levels of health care: primary, secondary and tertiary care. NPAO is served by a voluntary Board elected by the membership. NPAO sponsors an annual conference, maintains the web site, publishes a regular e-newsletter, facilitates local continuing education programs and offers five awards/bursaries to members.

Ontario has missed the April 1, 2026 deadline to clarify how it will meet the expectations outlined in the Canada Health Act interpretation letter, which directed provinces and territories to include services provided by NPs in publicly funded health insurance plans. Now NPs and patients are left to face the consequences of this inaction.

Under the status quo, NPs remain an underutilized resource within Ontario’s healthcare system. NPs are ready and committed to helping address the province’s healthcare challenges, but appropriate, equitable, and supportive funding models are essential to enable them to do so effectively.

As the voice of NPs in Ontario, NPAO will continue to work with the provincial government, system partners, and healthcare leaders to advance the urgent development and implementation of flexible funding models that better support both providers and patients across the province.

NPAO CEO Dr. NP Michelle Acorn joined The Rundown on to discuss the critical role Nurse Practitioners (NPs) play in transforming Ontario’s healthcare landscape, and the exceptional leadership they’ve demonstrated over the years.

NPs are highly skilled, autonomous providers delivering high-quality, cost-effective care across the system, yet outdated funding and integration barriers continue to limit our impact.

With the April 1 deadline for the Canada Health Act less than two days away, patients and providers are facing growing uncertainty. Without a clear public funding model, some Ontarians may still be paying out of pocket for medically necessary care.

Ontario has the NP workforce ready: now the system must enable and fund it.

Ontario had until April 1 to set up public funding for medically necessary care from nurse practitioners. But the province is set to miss that deadline. So w...

Today NPAO recognizes Trans Day of Visibility, a day to celebrate the resilience, leadership, and contributions of transgender and gender-diverse people in our communities.

Nurse Practitioners play an important role in providing inclusive, respectful, and affirming healthcare. Across Ontario, NPs work to create safe clinical environments, support gender-affirming care, and advocate for equitable access to services.

NPAO supports this work through our Rainbow Community of Practice, where Nurse Practitioners connect with peers, share resources, and strengthen inclusive care in clinical practice.

Are you a Nurse Practitioner interested in advancing inclusive care? Connect with colleagues through NPAO’s Rainbow Community of Practice.

We met with MPP today to discuss the need to advance flexible funding models and equitable compensation for Nurse Practitioners.

When NPs are supported through sustainable funding structures, access to care improves—especially in rural and remote communities.

Strengthening these models is a critical step toward a more accessible and resilient healthcare system in Ontario.

The Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario (NPAO) is proud to announce, alongside the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), that incorporated Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are now eligible to participate in HOOPP.

This is a significant milestone for NPs across the province, ensuring that incorporated NPs can now access the same trusted pension plan relied upon by many healthcare professionals across Ontario. A predictable, secure monthly income through HOOPP is a cornerstone of long-term financial stability and retirement planning.

NPs dedicate their careers to caring for people in communities across Ontario, in primary care, NP-led clinics, hospitals, long-term care, and other healthcare settings. We are proud that incorporated NPs can now join a pension community that reflects the essential role they play within the healthcare system.

NPAO thanks HOOPP for recognizing the value of Nurse Practitioners by extending pension access to incorporated NPs, and is proud to have advocated for their inclusion and integration.

Ontario’s 2026 Budget has been released, and while NPAO acknowledges the provincial government’s continued investments in healthcare, there remains significant absences and gaps in commitments for NPs that pose significant concerns.

These cannot be ignored.

NPAO is deeply troubled by these absences and urges the provincial government to work more closely with NPs to implement policies and investments that will truly serve the best interest of patients and practitioners. Read our full statement on Budget 2026 here: https://loom.ly/Cqx_0cY
