๐Ÿงก National Indigenous History Month | Continuing Our Journey of Truth, Reconciliation & Learning
As part of our 2023โ€“2024 Strategic Plan, the OAC*C committed to identifying colonial structures embedded in Child and Youth Care practice and using this knowledge to drive systemic change. This work is grounded in our responsibility to know, promote, and advocate for the Truth and Reconciliation Commissionโ€™s Calls to Action across our profession and communities of practice.

In alignment with this commitment, OAC*C members and leadership have been engaging in the Four Seasons of Indigenous Learning through the Outdoor Learning Store. We have completed Season One and are now preparing to enter Season Two, continuing this meaningful journey of unlearning, decolonization, and reconnection.

๐ŸŒฟ In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, we invite those who participated in Season One to continue alongside us in Season Two. A limited number of seats are available, and participation is open exclusively to current OAC*C members.

๐Ÿ“ฉ To secure your seat for Season Two, please email vicepresident@oacyc.org by June 29, 2025.
Letโ€™s continue learning, listening, and transforming. Centering Indigenous voices and lived experiences in all we do.

05/25/2025

๐Ÿšจ In 2023, 134 children connected to Ontario's care system died โ€” the highest number recorded to date.

That averages to one child every 2.7 days.

These numbers reflect a system under pressure. One that lacks the coordinated oversight, resources, and professional support necessary to protect young lives.

A recent Global News investigation reveals deep gaps in Ontarioโ€™s care network. These include inconsistent oversight, underqualified staffing, and service fragmentation.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Child and Youth Care Practitioners (C*CPs) are on the frontlines of this work. They show up with compassion, commitment, and skill, yet the profession remains unregulated in Ontario.

Without regulation:
๐Ÿ”น There are no consistent training standards
๐Ÿ”น No formal accountability mechanisms
๐Ÿ”น No professional protection for C*CPs or the youth they serve

๐Ÿงก Regulation is not about policing practitioners. Itโ€™s about building a system that supports and protects everyone involved, especially children and youth.

๐Ÿ“ฃ We are calling on the Government of Ontario to formally regulate the profession of Child and Youth Care.
๐Ÿ“ฃ We are calling on leaders in childrenโ€™s mental health and child welfare to stand with C*CPs and endorse this essential step forward.
