When you receive a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis the feeling is often one of fear and panic and the desire to improve bone density. After all who wants to be told they have osteoporosis! ? If the diagnosis is gone then I’m okay, right?

But what if we do all the right things, eat the right foods, lift weights, exercise, walk, and our bone density scans don’t improve? Is that really the goal? Or is it to move with ease and confidence, to prevent fractures and falls. To stay mobile and move in a way that doesn’t do damage to our bones, and maybe Strengthen the bones along the way?

I find the struggle is most often with the decisions around the diagnosis. ie. do I take medication? How much calcium is too much? Is it safe to do yoga? What yoga is best? As someone who has osteoporosis and practices yoga daily, I know it is possible to have a yoga practice that promotes well-being physically and emotionally.

I also believe we should avoid thinking of ourselves as fragile, to talk about our bones as being fragile.
I much prefer the mantra, “I’m a mountain, I am strong”.

Let’s have a discussion!

More and more friends as well as women who attend my yoga classes, (including other Yoga teachers! )have had a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis. The initial response is often panic, and the goal to reverse the prognosis. After all who wants to be told they have osteoporosis! ?

But what if we Do all the right things, eat properly, lift weights, exercise, walk, etc. and our scan results don’t improve. Is that really the goal? Or is it to move with ease and confidence, to prevent fractures and falls. To stay mobile and move in a way that doesn’t do damage to our bones, and maybe Strengthen the bones along the way?

I feel those with the label of osteoporosis don’t struggle with the disease but rather struggle more with the decisions around the diagnosis. ie. do I take medication? How much calcium is too much? Is it safe to do yoga? What moves aren’t safe?

I Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
