The artists in Grade 2 recently started creating a piece of collaborative abstract art, using a large piece of cardboard as the surface and acrylic paint as their medium. 🎨

According to Junior School Art Teacher Ms Chisholm, abstract collaborative artwork offers many benefits for our primary students by encouraging students to explore colours, shapes, and ideas without fear of making mistakes. “Working together builds teamwork, communication, and social skills as students share materials and respect each other’s contributions. This process also builds a sense of community and belonging, as every child’s input is valued in the final piece. Additionally, abstract art promotes problem-solving and critical thinking since students must decide how to combine different elements and ideas. This process boosts confidence and pride, as our young artists see what they can accomplish together.”

During Friday’s Homecoming Assembly, we shared a thoughtful video message from last year's School Captain Carol Zhou '25, who spoke to us from Washington, DC where she is studying.

Carol reflected on the strength of the SCS community and how ambition and compassion have always worked side by side at 21 St. Clements Avenue. She touched on the daily moments of care that define student life, and shared that the true legacy of an SCS education lives far beyond our walls. Carol also thanked the friends who supported her and helped her understand that failure is never final.

We were thrilled to welcome back members of the Class of 2025, and grateful for Carol’s inspiring words! 😊

Congratulations to our most recent Athlete of the Week, U14 Volleyball Team member Eva L. ’30! Eva was a steady force at the net in our recent playoff game, delivering strong blocks and smart plays under pressure. Her improved reaction time and serve have elevated her game, and her consistent effort in practice has translated into real growth on the court. Let’s hear it for Eva! 🏐

We’re less than a week away from the Senior School’s production of Mamma Mia! Set on a Greek island paradise where the sun always shines, this enchanting and uplifting tale of love, friendship, and identity is told through the feel-good, timeless hits of ABBA.

Our Clementines have been working hard – both as cast members on stage, and production crew behind the scenes – and we can’t wait to see the results, live on stage in Powell Hall with two performances on Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28! (See enews and Edsby for the ticket link).

Earlier today, we were excited to welcome back members of the Class of 2025 for Homecoming! Not only is this eagerly anticipated event an opportunity for members of last year's grad class to catch up, it's also fun and inspiring for current students to hear a little bit about what our grads have been up to since leaving SCS.

Thank you to all of our most recent alums for coming back home to SCS this morning! ❤️

Our Grade 4 students had a blast exploring simple machines today! Scientist-In-School Melinda guided students through hands-on activities with levers, gears, and pulleys, helping them discover how each simple machine works and how mechanical advantages make tasks easier. The students experimented throughout the morning and built real systems that brought these concepts to life, asking lots of great questions along the way! Thank you to Scientist Melinda and our Grades 4s for an inspiring learning experience. ⚙️

Spotted in our halls: some truly stunning installations from our Grade 8 students taking the Art and Design course, who used typography, Adobe Illustrator, and digital fabrication tools to turn UN Sustainable Development Goals into powerful visual pieces. 🌎

From laser‑cut letters to 3D‑printed words, their ideas came to life one phrase at a time!

During Junior School Community Time this morning, the Grade 1 class did an amazing job sharing what they have been learning about in Social Studies! Their recent unit on Identity had them considering how best to understand and respect their own, and each other’s, identities by using the Identity Star tool to help them think about different parts of who they are. As they explained to their Junior School peers this morning: “The star has points like ‘my history and language’, ‘what I look like’, ‘things I like’, ‘important events in my life’, ‘my roles and responsibilities’, ‘my heritage and culture’, and more! All these pieces make each of us unique. We used the star to notice what makes us special. Then we designed ‘Identity Treasure Boxes’. We took them home and filled them with items that show our identity.” 🎤

Each of the Grade 1 students bravely stepped in front of the microphone to talk to the assembled members of the Junior School about who they are, wowing the audience with their confident voices and big smiles. They even invited the whole Junior School community to think about their own identities with a fun question-and-answer session. It was a wonderful celebration of who we are and what makes each of us unique – thank you, Grade 1!
