This is Joel's first Family Day Weekend as a father in recovery.
Struggling with addiction for years, everything began to change when Joel's fiancé — now his wife — found Renascent and told Joel he needed help. He agreed, albeit with an ulterior motive. “Initially, I went to appease my fiancé and get my license back,” he says. “My plan was to come out and drink on weekends like a ‘normal person.’”
Then something unexpected happened. “I walked into Renascent, and I couldn’t tell the staff members from the clients,” he says. “Everyone was introducing themselves and offering to show me around. Everyone was welcoming.”
Through honesty, shared stories, and the structure of the 12 Steps, including learning to trust a Higher Power, Joel’s thinking began to shift. “I realized alcohol had made my life unmanageable,” he says. “And I’m powerless over it.”
Today, Joel can be around alcohol without wanting a drink. He attends meetings regularly, stays connected to the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, and continues therapy. He’s married, raising a daughter, and working in addictions and mental health.
Happy Family Day!

Today, Team Renascent came together for our first town hall of the year — a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the past year and align on our plans for the future as we continue advancing our life-changing mission.
We were also pleased to host our first town hall with our new CEO, Michael Lochran. Thank you to everyone who participated, and to the team members who ensured our clients continued to receive exceptional care while we met.
A special thank you to for generously providing the meeting space. Your partnership is greatly valued.

He’s been to over 90 countries, built a successful career, and lost over 100 pounds. But Wade’s greatest transformation didn’t happen at the gym or on the road. It happened when he finally asked for help.
Recovery brought him back to what mattered most: his health, his family, and a sense of belonging he hadn’t felt in years. Wade’s story is a reminder that help is there, and no one has to do this alone.
Relapse taught Renascent Alum, Sunith, that he couldn’t manage his addiction on his own – and that willingness, not willpower, opens the door to lasting change. Today, he calls the 12 Steps his “cheat code for living,” and his journey is a reminder of the profound change that honesty and surrender can create.
“I realized I still thought I could control my addiction,” he admits. “I had mistakenly believed that abstinence was more important than admitting my powerlessness, as Step 1 calls us to do. After seven months, I was still trying to do things on my own terms.
I recalled a counsellor saying I was like a dump truck on the highway – moving fast and looking fine on the outside, but always ending up at the dump. That analogy stayed with me. I knew I had to get off that road.
Renascent helped me discover and accept that I had a disease, and the 12-Step program helps with recovery,” he says. But still, he emphasizes, “there are no shortcuts. Recovery is like a garden. If I stop tending to it – if I ignore the weeds of my character defects – I’ll relapse. I’m learning every day, and recovery is something we never graduate from.”

Today is Day. This year’s theme is taking a moment for mental health. Let’s talk about addiction and recovery as a part of that conversation.
At the depths of her addiction, Renascent was there to guide Sue toward recovery. Through our expert care, she gained tools that helped her better manage life’s challenges.
Now in recovery for over 5 years, Sue pays it forward through service and generous giving, because she knows firsthand the transformative power of Renascent’s treatment programs.

Earlier this month, Renascent alumni and clients gathered online to participate in a Creative Writing in Recovery Workshop. Focused on the theme of ‘connection’, guests explored and expressed themselves through writing about this topic.
📷 Rachel, an alumni of Renascent attended the Workshop and chose to share her writing (below) and her painting (above) with you. May this inspire you to connect with someone today.
🌈Connection: Light Each Other’s Candles by Rachel
Connection is the essence of life. Recovery is sustained through connection, as the opposite of addiction is connection. Connection creates a bond between people, a sense of trust, and a place where one feels valued. When trust is broken, the connection wanes. Yet, when a feeling of non-judgement fills the air, people can connect with those gathered there. It is in relationships that we find hope, find recovery, and find love.
Even in the darkest times, connection can bring us through as we light each other’s candles. We shine light on the dark path together and face whatever journey lies ahead. Though the path may not be straight and the end is not in sight, connection guides us through to the morning light. It is what keeps us strong when the storms of life come, leading to the rainbow after the storm. As birds flock together, so must we come together in the storms of life. There is hope on the horizon as the lighthouse lights our way. When we stand together, we will be shown the way.
Connection with our higher power is essential indeed, for it guides our path and direction when we cannot see. The footprints in the sand. The time when all seems lost, our higher power carries us through the forest from above. Let us rely on that power as we connect with one another. Find a place of non-judgment and a place where we are valued. For our higher power loves us just the way we are, so let us love one another as the journey of life unfolds.

We love it when our alumni create and share their art with us. In this lovely piece created by Richard W., he highlights the fellowship that is created around the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Let's connect in fellowship at the upcoming Ontario Regional Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous. Renascent will once again have a hospitality suite at this year's conference. We can't wait to see you there.
💙Stay tuned for our invitation to volunteer.

Renascent’s clinical teams huddle every morning to discuss details associated with each client in their census. These Case Conferences are important points of connection where teams work together to assess each client’s specific needs. Everything from referrals to external resources, to notable changes in client disposition can be discussed; all with the goal of identifying how best to support each person.
Renascent’s new electronic health record (EMHware) helps make these conferences more efficient. The teams are moving towards being paperless as part of the transition to using EMHware, and being digital-forward has allowed staff to spend more therapeutic time with clients. The new platform has also streamlined communication among the various teams, saving time and creating efficiencies in care.
“EMHware has increased the quality and effectiveness of communication between our many programs,” explains Hayley Bloom, Associate Director of Programs. Now, there is more seamless communication and documentation through the new system, which enables us to provide a better experience for clients and our care partners.
