Members in the News: Canadian Pediatric Society Annual Conference - Québec City, QC — May 29–31, 2025
The 2025 Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) Annual Conference in Québec City proudly celebrated the achievements and influence of outstanding University of the West Indies (UWI) graduates. These distinguished alumni continue to demonstrate remarkable leadership and make significant contributions to paediatrics throughout Canada. The conference, held in Québec City, served as an exceptional forum for dynamic academic exchange, the latest clinical updates, and meaningful professional networking. The presence and active participation of UWI graduates underscored the profound impact of Caribbean-trained physicians in advancing child health across the nation. This is just one example of the many ways in which UWI alumni, both individually and collectively, are engaged in similar initiatives and activities dedicated to improving paediatric care and health outcomes across Canada and beyond.
Among the notable UWI Medical Alumni (UWIMAA) in attendance were Judy Seesahai (’98), Neonatology, Western University; Garth Smith (’81), Developmental Paediatrics, Queen’s University; Marisha McClean (’06), Paediatric Cardiology, Western University; Tristan Henry (’09), PGY1, McMaster University; Michelle Barton-Forbes (’89), Infectious Disease, Western University; Peter Wong (’82), Community Paediatrics/Cardiology, University of Toronto; and Sumeet Sadana (’98), General Paediatrics, CHEO/University of Ottawa. Also present were Nicholas Dorah (’95), General Paediatrics, St. Catharines; Melanie Kirby-Allen (’82), Haematology, SickKids/University of Toronto; and Sharon Smile (’97), Developmental Paediatrics, BC Children’s Hospital.
UWI alumni play significant roles in CPS leadership. Michelle Barton-Forbes currently serves as Chair of the Infectious Disease and Immunization Committee. Peter Wong holds multiple roles including Chair of the Community Paediatrics Committee, and member of both the Advocacy and Awards Committee. Judy Seesahai is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Section.
The conference also featured several engaging presentations by UWI graduates recognizing clinical excellence and innovative thinking. Marisha McClean delivered “Tricky Tickers 4.0: More ECGs and Interesting Cases in Cardiology”. Melanie Kirby-Allen presented “Highlights of Paediatric Sickle Cell Disease Management: Prevention, Complications, and Innovation”. Sharon Smile spoke on “Approaching Feeding Challenges in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder”, and Judy Seesahai had an abstract presentation and poster on “The Biopsychosocial Impact of a Nutrition Follow-Up Program on Families Discharged from the NICU with a Nasogastric Tube”. Special congratulations to Peter Wong, who received first place for his Clinical Case Presentation poster.
The UWI community continues to exemplify academic leadership, clinical expertise, and a deep commitment to advancing paediatric care. CPS 2025 was an opportunity to celebrate these achievements and strengthen UWI bonds across the Canadian paediatric landscape.
We look forward to continuing the tradition of UWI alumni at CPS 2026 in Ottawa and similar academic conferences in Canada and internationally!
