🚨 NEW Publication 🚨

🎉 Congratulations to Amika Shah, 2023 recipient of the Ted Rogers Centre Education Fund, on her recent publication in the BMJ Open!

Her study explores a critical issue in cardiovascular care: access to mental health support for people living with heart failure. Through interviews with patients, clinicians, and researchers, Amika uncovered key barriers that prevent people from getting the help they need.

Her findings offer a powerful case for more integrated, patient-centred mental health services within heart failure care.

🫀 In May, the Heart Hub launched "A Heart's Journey: A Patient & Caregiver Guide to Heart Transplant" – a new interactive guide for heart transplant patients and their loved ones, created in collaboration with the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre.

This easy-to-navigate resource walks you through every stage of the transplant journey—from assessment to recovery—offering expert insights, helpful tools, and most importantly, real stories from those with lived experience.

🎥 Meet Michelle, a double heart transplant recipient whose journey began after a spontaneous coronary artery dissection following the birth of her son. In her video, Michelle shares the emotional weight of the process, the power of support, and her deep gratitude for her donors and their families.

When Harper was just four years old, she was tethered to a machine the size of a dishwasher - her lifeline while waiting for a heart transplant. But with that lifeline came indefinite hospitalization and life in limbo.

Most big breakthroughs start with a simple question. In the new season of SickKids VS, we take you behind the scenes of remarkable stories wherein each episode researchers ask questions like: Can we heal the brain? How should we talk to kids about dying? And what can doctors do when a child’s dise...

🚨 NEW Publication 🚨

In stem cell research, the tools we use shape our outcomes, and those tools often don’t reflect the world’s genetic diversity, so the treatments we develop may fall short for many communities.

A new commentary led by Dr. James Ellis (Senior Scientist at SickKids) with colleagues in Kyoto and San Diego, calls for a more inclusive approach to induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines used to model disease and test therapies.

Reference iPSC lines are used to benchmark experiments and test new drugs or cell-based therapies. If these lines don't represent genetic diversity, the treatments built on them may not be effective for underrepresented populations.

With deep roots in Canadian science and global collaboration, Dr. Ellis and colleagues are pushing for a new standard: one that includes well-characterized, diverse iPSC lines reflective of the world’s population.
