When I ask patients when was your last eye exam, a lot of patients say “a long time ago” or “I can’t remember” or “this is my first eye exam” and when I ask “why so long” the usual response is “I have always seen well so I never needed an eye exam”.
A lot of people don’t understand that you can still see well or 20/20 and have all kinds of things happening at the back of their eyes. The most common condition I see in my patients with “normal vision” is diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma and fortunately many times they are caught at early stages.
It is important to remember you should have your eyes examined annually or every two years (depending on age) regardless if you have “perfect vision” or not wear glasses. The most important part of an eye exam is checking your ocular/retinal health so we can detect early signs of retinal disease.
