Ever wonder how the flu shot works?
The flu shot is a vaccine that is designed to protect against the influenza virus. When you receive the flu shot, your body is exposed to a small, inactivated (dead) version of the virus. This exposure prompts your immune system to produce antibodies, which are proteins that help fight off the virus. Once your body has produced these antibodies, they will remain on standby, ready to attack the influenza virus if you are exposed to it in the future. When this happens, your body can fight off the infection before you develop symptoms of the flu. This is why it is important to get a flu shot every year, as the protection provided by the vaccine can wane over time and the flu virus can mutate, making the previous year's vaccine less effective.
