Think your "supportive" shoes are helping? Science says they're ruining your feet.

We all know the feeling of kicking off restrictive shoes at the end of the day. But what if that relief is a sign of a much bigger problem?

Modern footwear, with their narrow toe boxes, elevated heels, and stiff soles are like a sensory deprivation chamber for your feet. It's like the foot version of wearing boxing gloves all day and expecting your hands to stay strong? This weakens your intrinsic foot muscles over time and leads to altered posture, and chronic pain.

The solution is a return to natural movement with minimalist footwear. This deep-dive article breaks down the science, debunks the biggest myths from the shoe industry, and shows how zero-drop, wide-toe-box shoes can restore your natural foot function.

Your shoes could be ruining your feet, and you may not even realize it. Modern footwear, with their narrow toe boxes, elevated heels, and stiff soles, have strayed far from what our feet need on a fundamental biological level. The design 'features' of modern shoes can weaken muscles, distort posture...

When you think "healthy breathing", do you think big, full breaths, trying to take in as much oxygen as possible? What if I told you that taking in excessive oxygen actually reduces the oxygen delivery to your tissues?

Well, it turns out, that we need a proper balance of carbon dioxide in our blood in order to release oxygen from the blood cells. That means longer exhalations, and taking in a little less oxygen equates more oxygen being circulated and released throughout the muscles, organs, and brain.

The Buteyko Method is a breathing practice that aims to restore our natural breathing habits by using exercises to slow our rate of breathing, and switch to nasal breathing, both adjustments that contribute to a more balanced ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, optimizing oxygenation of tissues.

Is athleticism and conventional fitness training really leading us to health, or is it leading us to injury and imbalance? In my latest article, I explore how fitness culture’s obsession with characteristics such as aesthetics, performance, and strength can harm long-term health.

This doesn't mean you have to stop doing the fitness activities you enjoy to be healthy, but it's a calling to find balance. What do you do for your self-care, mobility, and rest, leads to true, lasting well-being.

Athletes may be the best example for peak performance, but approaching that peak comes at a cost to their heath. For most professional athletes, the plan is to perform as intensely as possible until their bodies cannot hold up enough to compete with the best. Along the way, they ideally become successful enough that they can retire, but they are not prioritizing health longevity... Certainly not over performance. Given this case, if we are trying to be healthy and happy, is copying what athletes do for training the best way to go about this? I don't think so.

Are you trying to sabotage your health with your training approach, or build the most resilient, healthful body that will last a lifetime? Let’s break down the myths and get real about what should reflect true human fitness. Check it out!

Challenge some of the beliefs we hold about fitness, especially the ones that might be systemically pushing us in unhealthy directions.
