We loved breaking bread with the team this toasty summer evening. Great food and great conversation spanning therapy trainings, couples therapy, pets (including snakes and rats!), and travel plans. We’re signing off from social media for the summer but we’ll be back to introduce a fabulous masters student who will be offering low fee psychotherapy sessions supervised by the two of us for the 2025-2026 practicum.
Wishing you a lovely rest of summer,
Jill and Samantha

Well Parents team member and social worker psychotherapist Bridgit Ganson contributed a fantastic blog post highlighting the mental health needs of non-birthing q***r parents. Some excerpts
From her blog post follow, but please give it a full read at https://www.wellparentscentre.com/blog/

For non-birthing parents in 2SLGBTQIA+ families, the postpartum period can be just as emotionally intense and identity-shifting as it is for the birthing parent—yet their mental health needs often go unseen.

Bridgit highlighted the need for:

●      Mental health screening for all parents: Anxiety, depression, and trauma are not exclusive to those who give birth.
●      Affirming language and intake processes: Replace “mom and dad” with “parent,” “co-parent,” or the person’s chosen title. Make space for self-definition.
●      Normalizing the adjustment: Becoming a parent is a major life transition. All parents need space to reflect, grieve, adapt, and ask for help.
●      Access to q***r-affirming therapy: Clinicians who understand the nuances of identity, visibility, and family formation in q***r communities can provide more meaningful care.

At The Well Parents Centre, we are committed to providing a space where q***r families feel seen, safe, and supported throughout their entire parenting journey.

● Individual psychotherapy for birthing and non-birthing parents
● Couples therapy that centers communication, connection, and shared transitions
● Support for navigating fertility challenges, donor conception, and surrogacy
● Affirming care for grief, loss, and postpartum mental health

Whether you’re adjusting to life with a newborn, managing identity shifts in early parenthood, or feeling the weight of being unseen in traditional systems—you’re welcome at The Well Parents Centre.

Thank you to Bridgit and Happy Pride!

“Happy Mother’s Day” is a phrase that means well, but says little. Of course, we do wish you happiness on this day, but for many, the phrase is convention that has the emptiness of “good, how are you?”.

We want to honour the enormity of motherhood in all its complexity. We can feel it all. We strive to let our negative feelings sit alongside our positive feelings, as we don’t have to choose to just feel one way. Whatever you feel on the day, know that you are not alone.

What is your biggest passion in therapy?

I’m deeply passionate about supporting individuals and couples by using an integrative therapeutic approach. I believe that each person is unique, and addressing different areas of life—whether it’s emotional, relational, or behavioral—can be transformative. My goal is to help clients navigate their challenges, empower them to understand themselves better, and work towards their own healing and growth.

What led you to work with pregnant and postpartum clients?

As someone who has experienced the emotional and physical changes that come with pregnancy and postpartum, I understand how overwhelming and isolating it can feel. Reaching out for help during this time can be a daunting step, but it’s also a vital one. I am passionate about offering support to expectant and new parents, helping them feel heard, understood, and equipped to navigate this life transition with confidence and emotional wellbeing.

What drew you to couples therapy?

Couples therapy is close to my heart because I firmly believe that healthy, supportive relationships are the foundation of a fulfilling life. What drew me to this area of practice is my desire to help partners rebuild connection, strengthen communication, and work through challenges in a safe and non-judgmental space. Whether it’s improving intimacy, resolving conflict, or simply learning to communicate better, I am committed to helping couples build a stronger foundation together. Each client I work with reminds me of the power of therapy in helping people create meaningful change.
