The human body is amazing! Not only can it grow another organ and create another human being, it can also feed that human. Although breastfeeding has evolved throughout the centuries, it continues to be a critical aspect of human development.
✨✨✨
Let’s talk about the hormones released during breastfeeding/chest feeding:
Prolactin: “When a baby suckles, the level of prolactin in the blood increases, and stimulates production of milk by the alveoli…During the first few weeks, the more a baby suckles and stimulates the ni**le, the more prolactin is produced, and the more milk is produced.” Prolactin works really well at night so nighttime feeds are recommended to keep up the milk supply.
Oxytocin: “The oxytocin reflex is also sometimes called the “letdown reflex” or the “milk ejection reflex”. Oxytocin is produced more quickly than prolactin. It makes the milk that is already in the breast flow for the current feed, and helps the baby to get the milk easily.” Oxytocin works well when you anticipate feeding your baby. Like when you smell, hear, see, touch or think about your baby. Isn’t it awesome that you body can anticipate the needs of your baby? 😎
✨ “It is important to understand the oxytocin reflex, because it explains why you and your baby should be kept together and why you should have skin-to-skin contact.”✨
