Did you know that abrasions, cuts and bruises, soft tissue injury, fractures, to dislocations are some of the injuries that can occur while sledding or tobogganing?

Below are some tips on how to avoid injuries:
• Do some stretching before you go sledding or tobogganing.
• Sit or lay on your back on top of the sled with feet pointing downhill
• Make sure the slopes don’t have any holes or obstructions
• Check your equipment, make sure is in good condition and there are no damages or cracks

These simple measures can help in making sure you and your family can still have fun while doing this fun outdoor activity!

February was a cold month!
We had quite a lot of snow in Toronto and some of us had no choice but to go out there and shovel snow! It’s hard to imagine, but snow shoveling can strain your back and cause other injuries. Below are some tips on how to prevent injuries:

• Warm up and stretch first before going out to shovel snow
• Keep your back straight / or a neutral spine
• Use your hips and legs (as you scoop snow), and bend your knees
• Shovel smaller loads/scoops, don’t strain your back by filling too much snow in the shovel
• Take frequent breaks and don’t overdo it

Sitting down for long periods of time can be harmful to your health. Injuries can be minimized by doing some minor exercises. The following are some tips to help you: • Alternate between sitting and standing for example; if you work at a desk, try a standing desk • Take a short break from sitting every 30 minutes or so • Touch your toes, (or do some quick jumping jacks) to get your blood pumping • Stand when you can. For example, make all phone calls while standing Whatever you can do to move throughout the day will help your body stay active and healthy.

Do you feel shoulder, neck, and back pain from wearing your backpack?
If you’re having to wear a backpack daily, consider getting one that is proportional to your size.
For example:
The bottom of the bag should sit at the waist level. Pack light but if you must carry heavy items, such as books, laptop etc. Try to pack the heaviest items closest to the back and in the middle of the backpack. By purchasing the right backpack and wearing it correctly, you can minimize discomfort and poor posture habits.
