Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are small mouth lesions often triggered by spicy, acidic foods, toothbrush trauma, or SLS in toothpaste.

While they’re sometimes idiopathic (no clear cause), here are tips to manage them:

👩🏽‍⚕️ Ask your dentist or pharmacist about OTC products to promote healing.
🌶 Avoid trigger foods and opt for SLS-free toothpastes.

What your hygienist wants you to know…

Your time with us is less about your teeth and more about:

Fostering and facilitating relationships.

Anticipating what you need.

Understanding your values and your capacity for self-care.

Creating a space where trust can grow and care feels safe.

Where information empowers instead of overwhelms.

Where the care you receive supports your health, wellness, and confidence.

Where small, realistic changes lead to lasting health.

Because behind every set of teeth is a person—you—who deserves respect, empathy, and optimal oral health.

Dentally yours,A hygienist.

News release from February 26, 2026 (Ottawa, ON) — New national public opinion research released today by the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) shows Canadians place exceptionally high trust in dental hygienists and strongly support prevention‑focused dental hygiene care, while also acknowledging that barriers to access remain.

The polling, conducted by Abacus Data, found that 96 per cent of Canadians hold a positive impression of dental hygienists, with more than eight in ten viewing them as an essential or important part of the health care system.

These findings underscore the central role dental hygienists play in prevention, early disease detection, and the maintenance of oral and overall health.

What you can’t see can hurt your oral health!

Dental plaque is yellow to white in colour and can be difficult to spot 🔎 If it’s not removed with a toothbrush and floss, it can irritate your gums and put you at risk for cavities.

Flossing is the best way to remove dental plaque from between teeth, while brushing cleans all the other surfaces. If you aren't getting just below the gumline with your toothbrush, you're likely leaving disease causing bacteria behind!

Seeing pink in the sink or on the string is a sign that you have gingivitis; a reversible (and preventable) oral health problem.

New to flossing? Start with a realistic goal, like twice a week. You can expect a little bleeding and some discomfort the first few times, but after a couple of weeks, you should feel a difference.

Your hygienist can recommend products, assess your technique, and suggest specific daily habits that best support your individual needs 🙌
