While I don’t have that one card I need to connect with before I make a decision about a deck, I do find that I’m often drawn to The Devil. I find this card to be one of the most diverse. Whereas some cards - like the 3 of Swords - almost always carry the RWS imagery, The Devil comes in many forms. Sometimes, he’s frightening; other times, he’s as charming as the stereotypes makes him out to be.

I read Life of Pi for the first time over 20 years ago. To this day, it remains one of my favourite novels of all time.

This books tells a tragic story but it is so filled with magic and hope that one is left inspired in the end.

What I love most about this story is the message that faith is a universal human aspiration, regardless of creed and culture. It’s a reminder of the resilience humans are capable of when one has faith.

I have very strong mixed feelings about this deck. Having done several readings with it, I REALLY like working with the body parts correspondence. It gives the cards a whole new dimension to work with.

Take this reading for example: focusing on the body parts Bones, Nose, and Ligaments, I read this message as building a strong foundation of consciousness in order to perceive all the ways we connect with the world around us.

The things I REALLY don’t like about this deck is the body part names are so small and often too dark to read. As I can’t always tell what the organ is by the picture, I have to refer to the guidebook, which takes me out of the flow.

Also, there is an inconsistency in the style of art that I find really distracting. In these cards, the 2 of Wands is drawn in anime style, the 2 of Swords like a tradition painting, and the King of Pentacles looks like an actual photo put through a painting filter.

Did anyone else back this deck? If so, I’d love to hear your opinion!

Ironically, the day after I posted about being ready to reduce my deck purchases, I received 4 sets of decks from Kickstarter and delayed Christmas presents.

The Blue Apple Tarot is one of them. I got this deck because I am interested in the correspondence between each card and body parts. Unfortunately, the names of each body part is sooooo small that I practically need a magnifying glass to see them. To be fair, the body part is also drawn beside the card name but as I’m not an anatomy experts, I’m not familiar with shapes of most internal organs.

The good thing is that I’m still enjoying the deck a lot. I haven’t gone through the entire guidebook yet, but for the cards I’ve read, I find the correspondences to be quite interesting!

Going through some stuff and found this mashup I made. This was one of my first posts!

I made this when I was learning how to use Photoshop. I remember being quite proud of myself at the time 😁

With The Tarot of Curious Creatures, Chris-Anne does it again! This creator mixes colour and fashion with joy to create a deck that is a feast for the eyes and the heart.

This lovely deck features beautiful animal people that are sassy and playful, but also classy and elegant. I've said this before about The Muse Tarot and I'll say it again about Curious Creatures - decks with beautiful people as their selling point usually don't read well for me, but this deck is an exception.

The animal people of Curious Creatures are incredibly expressive, making this deck easy to read with. Even though they have animal faces, they still manage to display emotions. The ostrich in the 3 of Swords is wailing with grief while the fish in the 5 of Cups look sad somehow. The Queen of Sword is an owl with her eyes closed. It's a simple detail and, yet, it gives reader such a rich symbolism to work with.

In addition to the facial features, the artist also makes great use of body postures. We can see this by comparing the Magician with the High Priestess. Whereas the Magician's posed theatrically with his arms open and raised high in the air, the High Priestess' arms are close to her body in a calm and collected manner. In this way, we can see that the Magician is outwardly focused while the High Priestess is more reserved. Yet, both display confidence and self-assuredness.

Another clever and deceptively simple detail of this deck is the extra fool card, titled Fool 2.0. The first Fool shows a dog leaping off a cliff. This is the only card in the deck to feature a full animal, not an animal head over a human body. In the second Fool, we see the same dog, except, this time she sports a human body and is posed like a swimmer about to dive into a pool. The Fool has seen some things on her first journey. This time around, she is a bit wiser and, instead of leaping w***y nilly into the unknown, she is calculated and ready.

The card backs for this deck shares the same design concept as The Muse Tarot, making these two great companion decks.
