Moroccan beef and lentil stew has been a hearty and delicious lunchtime staple this winter!
•
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lbs stewing beef, 1” cubes, extra fat trimmed
- 2 small-med onions, finely chopped
- half bunch of celery, finely chopped
- 2 med sweet potatoes, peeled and finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1L beef broth
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tbsp raw coconut sugar (or molasses)
- 1 tsp each: salt, cumin, turmeric, onion powder, garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp each: cinnamon, coriander, pepper
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 3 tbsp tomato paste (I didn’t have any so I used about 15 cherry tomatoes, halved, and it worked perfectly!)
- 3 bay leaves
- 1 cup uncooked lentils, rinsed
- 2 heads of broccoli, chopped
•
Directions:
- In olive oil, sauté onions over med heat for 3-5 min
- Add celery and garlic, sauté for 3-5 min
- Add beef and brown slightly, about 5 minutes
- Deglaze with broth, add everything except lentils and broccoli. Cover and bring to a gentle boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 1h.
- Add lentils. Cook with lid off, until tender and stew thickens. About 20 min.
- Add additional salt if needed, to taste
- Remove from heat, stir in broccoli. No need to cook, it will soften!
- Makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy!

How are you feeling? If you're feeling low or anxious, you're not alone. Here are six simple steps to support your mood:
•
1. Reach out for support
•
This might mean seeing your MD for medication, ND for supplements and nutrition advice, and/or a therapist for talk therapy. leads to .
•
2. Eat more protein
•
We make and (our anti and feel-good hormones) from . If we don't eat enough protein, we don't make enough of these hormones, and our mood plummets.
•
TIP: add collagen to your coffee/oatmeal and sprinkle h**p hearts on EVERYTHING for some simple protein boosts.
•
3. Move your body
•
Physical activity improves self esteem, motivation, s*x drive, and brain function. Start slow - walking or stretching are a great start.
•
4. Take vitamin D
•
is a real thing... every adult should be taking 1000 IU of vitamin D daily during the winter months.
•
5. Reduce alcohol
•
Alcohol is a depressant, and it also makes it more challenging to self-regulate our emotions. You may think it's a coping mechanism, but it's more likely backfiring when it comes to your mood.
•
6. Accountability
•
It's challenging to stay on top of all the things we need to do each day to support our mood. Set up strategies to stay accountable in advance: book in with your ND or therapist, schedule calls with friends, keep a checklist.

Vitamin B12 levels should be tested 1-2 times per year, and we should aim for levels above 400 pmol/L for optimal health.

Does it feel like your symptoms, health issues, or the you way you feel is beyond your control? It doesn’t have to feel that way.
IT’S TIME TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH, ELIMINATE SYMPTOMS, AND FEEL GOOD AGAIN.
As your Naturopathic Doctor, I treat anything that your family doctor would treat. In fact, I often work to eliminate the symptoms that your MD might overlook, under-appreciate, or over-medicate.
My perspective is different because I look at you as a whole person. My goal is to understand why you’re feeling the way you do, so that I can treat the underlying causes of your health concerns.
Based on your health history, physical exam, and lab test results, we create an individualized treatment plan using all-natural treatments including dietary changes, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, lifestyle counselling, and acupuncture. The treatments I use are all evidence-based, meaning they have research to support their efficacy.
