Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM) is one of the top Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture institutions in North America.

When it comes to excellence in education, TSTCM has a proven track-record. Founded in 1995 by Mary Xiumei Wu, one of Canada’s foremost experts on Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, the school has spent the last 20 years refining its curriculum and training methods to ensure that graduates are prepared to meet the challenges of CTCMA certification in BC and Pan-Canadian examinations (starting in 201

3) in Canada, and NCCAOM examinations in the United States. Since 2001 graduates of TSTCM have taken NCCAOM exams in the U.S and CTCMA exams in BC with high pass-rate. In Ontario, the TCM profession has been regulated since April 1, 2013 and College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) is established under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Act, 2006. We are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our students will experience the same level of success with Pan-Canadian examinations and CTCMPAO registration that they have had in other jurisdictions. With our proven training methods, graduates have all the tools they need to build rewarding and successful careers practicing TCM. Our graduates have attained a reputation for excellence in the field of alternative health care and are highly sought-after by wellness and medical clinics. Many have gone on to open their own successful practices. TSTCM offers classes with flexible schedules and modularized programs, catering to the needs of students. Classes are offered during the daytime, evenings, and on weekends. Students can study one modality at a time in a modular fashion while working toward the completion of one of the comprehensive diploma programs. Our approach to in-class teaching and clinical training is innovative and highly effective. Classes are delivered within a supportive and inspiring environment, and encompass traditional as well as modern approaches to TCM education. The campus also includes an on-site teaching clinic to serve the local community, where upper-year students diagnose patients, formulate treatment plans, and deliver acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tuina treatments under the supervision of experienced TCM experts. We have assembled an expert faculty with many years of experience teaching and practicing Chinese Medicine in China and North America. Each and every one of our instructors is an outstanding individual who is carefully selected for his or her depth of knowledge and passion for teaching. Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine is not only an educational institute providing formal training programs for acupuncture and TCM practitioners but also a professional traditional Chinese medical care center providing high quality TCM services by well respected TCM experts and our interns.

🧠🌿 Acupuncture May Enhance Cognitive Recovery After Stroke

A randomized controlled trial conducted at Shanghai Yangzhi Rehabilitation Hospital, affiliated with Tongji University, found that electroacupuncture combined with cognitive rehabilitation led to greater improvements in cognitive function compared to rehabilitation alone in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment.

Patients receiving the combined treatment showed stronger improvements in memory, attention, and overall cognitive performance. Advanced brain imaging also revealed improved brain network connectivity, suggesting acupuncture may support neuroplasticity and cognitive recovery after stroke.

🌿 In Traditional Chinese Medicine, points such as Baihui (GV20) and Shenting (GV24) are used to help nourish the brain, restore mental clarity, and regulate Shen (mental and emotional activity).

At TSTCM (Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine), students learn evidence-informed acupuncture techniques while gaining hands-on clinical experience.

💆 Our Teaching Clinic provides affordable acupuncture treatments delivered by supervised interns and licensed practitioners, supporting conditions such as stroke recovery, cognitive health, pain, and more.

🧠✨ New Research Highlights Acupuncture’s Role in Adolescent Depression ✨🧠

A 2025 multi-center clinical trial found that acupuncture significantly reduced depressive symptoms in adolescents (ages 12–18), with measurable changes in neurotransmitters and brain networks linked to mood and sleep regulation.

Key findings include increased serotonin and dopamine, improved sleep and somatic symptoms, and normalization of depression-related brain circuits. The best outcomes were seen when acupuncture was combined with antidepressant therapy.

Rooted in classical TCM principles, the treatment focused on calming the shen, regulating liver qi, and strengthening the spleen and stomach.

📚 At TSTCM, we’re proud to teach acupuncture that’s supported by both traditional wisdom and modern neuroscience.

If you live with migraines, you know it’s not just a headache. The pain, light sensitivity, anxiety, and brain fog can affect your whole life.
A 2025 brain-imaging study published in CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics found that acupuncture significantly reduced migraine pain and anxiety—with visible changes in brain networks that control pain, light sensitivity, and emotional regulation.

Researchers showed that acupuncture helps rebalance communication between the brain’s pain relay center (thalamus) and sensory–emotional regions, involving serotonin pathways linked to both migraine and mood. Even more encouraging: people with long-term or more severe migraines improved the most.

✨ This confirms what TCM has long understood—acupuncture doesn’t just mask pain, it helps retrain the brain.

At the TSTCM Teaching Clinic, we offer:
✔️ Evidence-informed acupuncture
✔️ Personalized care
✔️ Affordable treatments in a supervised teaching clinic
