CN Tower was lit up in red to raise awareness for 22q on November 22nd!

The weather condition was excellent, and we could spot the red CN Tower even from 30 km away. Nevertheless, seeing the tower in close proximity was a real experience. The most recognizable Toronto landmark was majestic when lit in bright red. Of course, we keep in mind the true meaning of this event - we want to let Toronto and even the whole world know about 22q, an under-recognized condition that affects 1 in 2,148 live births.

Thanks to everyone who shared this great news!

Please share!!

We are delighted to let you know that the CN Tower will be lit up in red to raise awareness for 22q on November 22. We chose this date ("22/11") as a play on the name of the condition, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (“22q”), an under-recognized condition that affects 1 in 2,148 live births.

The lighting of the CN Tower is part of the “Luces por el 22q/Lighting the 22q” international awareness movement that began in Spain in 2018. Buildings in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Finland and the city of Philadelphia, United States, were lit up as part of the movement in 2020, and will be again this year on the 22nd of November. Now joining this international awareness movement will be Toronto – a national leader in providing care for families through clinics at the Toronto General Hospital and at SickKids Hospital, and in internationally renowned research into adult outcomes and genetics.

If you wish to photograph or gather to watch the lighting, please note that the Tower will be lit at sunset (about 4:46 PM on Monday evening, November 22, 2021). However, the red light will only become visible as the sky darkens, which occurs approximately 30 minutes after sunset, so by about 5:15 PM.

In addition, the CN Tower presents a standard light show for 8 minutes at the top of every hour, so, at 5 PM, 6 PM, 7 PM, etc., until 5:08, 6:08, 7:08, etc., PM.

If you would like to view the lighting virtually, please visit the CN Tower’s website for their Earthcams.

If you take pictures to raise awareness for 22q, please tag them with or when you post them on social media.

Together we will be able to illuminate 22q!

The 22q11.2 community is responding to perceived inaccuracies and unsubstantiated medical recommendations in a Washington Post article of May 1, 2021. The article in question is “Doctors said the boy was suffering from teenage psychosis. What he really had was a rare genetic condition.” The genetic condition the article refers to is 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Three of the letters that 22q11.2 experts have written to the Washington Post can be found on the 22q11.2 Society website:

This should be a radio special worth listening to. Starting June 16th, CBC Radio One will be broadcasting highlights of the recent CAMH town hall covering the topic of higher-needs kids and transitioning out of pediatric care.

Give it a listen and share your thoughts!

Help for parents and their high-needs kids as they age out of the system.
