Depression isn't always just about mood. Sometimes it's about energy.
Emerging research is exploring the role of mitochondria, the energy producing systems in our cells, in mental health.
When cellular energy is low, it can affect: motivation, emotional resilience and cognitive clarity.
From a biological perspective, some experiences of depression may reflect a reduction in physiological capacity, not just psychological factors.
This doesn't replace therapy or medications but it can expand how we understand what someone is experiencing.
I wrote more about this in my latest post on Substack.
