This year’s flu season has felt the harsh effects of H3N2, a new mutated strain of Influenza. Physicians in Toronto hospitals are seeing a pattern in their admissions: a wave of older patients with influenza who are vulnerable to severe complications, such as pneumonia and trouble breathing.
According to Dr. Tajinder Kaura, our Chief of Emergency Services, our Apotex Emergency Department has been seeing more patient transfers from nursing homes this flu season, as well as more admissions than usual, the majority being seniors.
To keep yourself and those around you safe, we encourage you to adhere to the following measures: Self-monitoring for symptoms, cleaning your hands well, using proper respiratory etiquette when coughing or sneezing, cleaning and disinfecting high touch surfaces, obtaining vaccines for COVID and influenza, and masking when necessary.
