What really causes bad breath (halitosis)? 🦷
Bad breath isn’t just about what you eat. It’s often linked to what’s happening inside your mouth. Most cases are caused by bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) when they break down leftover food particles. These compounds are the main source of unpleasant odors.
Other factors include dry mouth (xerostomia) often due to dehydration or certain medications like antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs which reduce saliva flow and allow odor-causing bacteria to thrive. Gum disease, cavities, smoking, and strong-smelling foods can also contribute. Certain medical conditions also play a role such as a sinus infection, diabetes, or gastrointestinal issues.
🪥 How to prevent it:
• Brush twice daily (including your tongue) and floss regularly
• Stay hydrated and avoid to***co
• Manage dry mouth. Sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva
• Visit your dentist for regular cleanings and to rule out gum disease
Fresh breath starts with a healthy mouth and good daily habits make all the difference. 😁✨
