In recent decades, acupuncture has been increasingly embraced as a potential treatment for inflammation.

In this article, the author summarizes some of these studies, and presents the most recent study, pinpointing the actual neurons that can be affected by acupuncture to reduce inflammation.

Conditions that cause excessive inflammation could benefit from these findings, including infections (like COVID-19), inflammatory bowel syndrome, arthritis, and certain reactions to cancer treatment.

Depression is associated with higher mortality risk for patients with prostate cancer, especially for those with metastatic prostate cancer.

This study found that using Chinese herbal medicine specifically for depression was associated with a longer lifespan in prostate cancer patients with depression.
If you or a loved one is dealing with prostate cancer and depression, it might be worth exploring TCM as a complementary treatment option.

Although more research is needed to confirm the findings of this study, it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Having any brain fog? Chemotherapy can cause side effects like “chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI)”. This study evaluated the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture therapy in relieving CRCI, measured both by tests the patient took, as well as blood markers.

“Eighty patients were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group with 40 patients in each group. The treatment group was treated at the following acupuncture points: Baihui (DU20), Sishencong (EX-HN1), Shenting (DU24), Zusanli (ST36), Taixi (K13), Dazhong (K14), and Juegu (GB39). Cognitive function was assessed using the functional assessment of cancer treatment cognition test (FACT-COG, version 3), the auditory-verbal learning test (AVLT), the verbal fluency test (VFT), the symbol digit modality test (SDMT), the clock-drawing test (CDT), and the trail-making test part B (TMT-B). In addition, blood serum levels of BDNF were measured before and after treatment. Correlations between change in BDNF levels and cognitive function were also analyzed.”

This journal article bridges the biomedical and Chinese Medicine view of cancer treatment. It shows how the Chinese Medicine treatment strategies might be seen from a biomedical lens.

The authors discusses research evidence for the actions of anti-cancer herbs, and how they may target some of the key issues in cancer and the tumor micro-environment, such as immunity, inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, angiogenesis, metabolic imbalance and adrenergic signaling.

Studies have shown that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can reduce the side effects of breast cancer treatment and improve quality of life. This helps you with recovery indirectly, by encouraging you to stick it out for your entire treatment plan.

But is it true that TCM can DIRECTLY improve your recovery from breast cancer? Can taking Chinese herbs help you live longer after or with breast cancer?

Some researchers have looked at this question and found interesting results. One study, published in the journal Cancer, examined 729 advanced breast cancer patients receiving taxanes. It found that TCM users had a decreased risk of all-cause mortality than non-users. A stronger effect was seen among those who used the TCM for more than 180 days per year.

Among the frequently used Chinese herbs, those found to be most associated with reduced mortality were Bai Hua She She Cao, Ban Zhi Lian, and Huang Qi.The three herbs most associated with breast cancer patients living longer were Bai Hua She She Cao, Ban Zhi Lian, and Huang Qi.

"What I will say is that what I have learned for myself is that I don’t have to be anybody else; and that myself is good enough; and that when I am being true to that self, then I can avail myself to extraordinary things. You have to allow for the impossible to be possible." - Lupita Nyong'o
