A message from Andrea our Mindfulness Coach:
Small Moments of Steady

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated—and it’s not something you have to do “right.”

At TrentView Counselling Center, we see mindfulness as an invitation. You are always in charge of your experience.

Here are a few simple practices you might explore:

Look around
Gently notice a few things you can see. Let your eyes land on something neutral or pleasant.

Feel your support
Notice your feet on the ground or your body supported by a chair. You might press your hands gently into your legs.

Connect with something comforting
A warm drink, a soft texture, a pet, or a familiar object—anything that brings even a small sense of ease.

Check in
Ask yourself: “What feels supportive right now?”
No need to fix anything—just noticing is enough.

You can always opt out
If something doesn’t feel right, you can pause, shift, or stop at any time.

Small moments matter. And you get to choose what feels right for you.

Words can actually cause harm
You’ve heard it before. Many, many times. You may have said it yourself. “She’s just crazy.” Or “I’m being insane right now.” Think of all the words we use in our everyday language that also mock or cut down someone with a mental illness—or a problem with substance use. You hear this kind of language in the media. On social media. In conversation. You even hear it in the House of Commons.

Stress
We all talk about stress, but we’re not always clear about what it is. Stress comes from both the good and the bad things that happen to us. If we didn’t feel any stress, we wouldn’t be alive! Stress may feel overwhelming at times, but there are many strategies to help you take control.

Have you ever experienced unwanted/intrusive, persistent thoughts (obsessions) that feel so unpleasant and inescapable that you begin performing repetitive behaviours (compulsions) to ease the discomfort?
If you answered yes, how much of your day is this consuming? If your compulsions are reaching a debilitating level (1+ hours per day) come in a chat with me, Nicole McEvoy. I am a registered psychotherapist specializing in treating OCD and symptoms of OCD. I can work with you to help stop the cycle that perpetuates these symptoms. These types of symptoms can feel scary and sometimes even make people feel depressed or worse.
You don’t have to do this alone. Book with me and we can work together to break the cycle.

Getting Help
Some people worry about asking for help because there can be stigma around mental health problems. They may believe that asking for help means admitting that something is wrong. Some people worry about how others might see them. Asking for help means that you want to make changes or take steps towards your new health goals. We should celebrate the courage it takes to speak up and make changes. Getting help is part of recovery.

Mindfulness
Many of us lead busy lives. We are busy thinking about yesterday and busy planning for tomorrow. When we focus on the past and future, we aren’t paying a lot of attention to the present—where we are right now. Mindfulness is simply an invitation to step out of the clutter and really focus on what we are doing, thinking, and feeling in this moment.
