This week (July 20-26th) has been Restless Leg Syndrome Education & Awareness Week.
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is that uncomfortable, irresistible urge to move your legs, especially in the evenings or when lying down. It’s not just “nervous energy”—it can be downright disruptive to your sleep, your sanity, and your Netflix binges.
Here are some suggestions that may help when your legs decide that they have somewhere else to be:
🌿 Magnesium + Iron — Deficiencies can worsen RLS. Check with your doctor (or consult with our Naturopath!) and consider supplements or magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate (yes, please).
💤 Better Sleep Hygiene — RLS loves chaos. Create a bedtime routine that includes winding down, stretching, dim lights, and a regular sleep schedule.
🧘♀️ Gentle Movement — Yoga, walking, and stretching (especially before bed) can help soothe the nervous system and settle your body.
🛀 Warm Baths + Compresses — Heat relaxes the muscles and nervous system. Add Epsom salts for bonus magnesium.
💊 Check Your Meds — Some medications can worsen RLS (like antihistamines or certain antidepressants). If RLS is bothering you, it may be worth talking to your healthcare provider about alternatives.
🧠 Mind-Body Work — Restless legs can be tied to stress and nervous system dysregulation. Practices like meditation, breathwork, and craniosacral therapy (which we offer!) and our Vagus Nerve Stimulation treatments can help calm your whole system—not just your legs.
✨Pro tip: Track what makes your RLS worse or better—caffeine, sugar, stress, dehydration, screen time, and even certain foods can all be culprits. Keeping track of what you do, what you consume, and how you feel, as well as whether or not RLS occurred, in a notebook or note-taking app, is very helpful for your own awareness, and serves as intel for your healthcare practitioners.
Your legs aren’t misbehaving… they’re just trying to tell you something. Maybe it’s time to listen.
