How does diabetes affect your vision?

Usually, the first ocular sign of diabetes is fluctuations in your glasses prescription, or blurry, fluctuating, and double vision.

Other ways that diabetes can affect your eyes and vision:
- flashes and floaters
- increased risk of cataracts and glaucoma
- paralysis of the nerves that control the eye muscles of the pupil
- decreased corneal sensitivity

The most serious eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. If left untreated, this can cause permanent vision loss.

A comprehensive eye examination is often the only way to detect early signs of glaucoma. A comprehensive eye exam allows an optometrist to see what you can’t.
