We’re getting closer to Across Boundaries’ 30th anniversary conference, and we’re excited to introduce the incredible women helping lead the day.

Patricia Jaggernauth will be joining us as our keynote speaker and event host. Many know her from her long career in Canadian media, but she’s also a powerful advocate for community wellness and culturally grounded mental health care. Her connection to Across Boundaries runs deep, and we’re honoured to welcome her back in this way.

Moderating the panel conversations are Shaheen Ali, one of the founding members of Across Boundaries, who helped shape our AR/AO frameworks, and Debbie Douglas, Executive Director of OCASI and a long-time advocate for equity, inclusion, and justice within the immigration and settlement sectors.

We’re grateful to have them guide us through this important gathering.

Earlier this month, we hosted a deeply reflective webinar marking 10 years since the death of Andrew Loku. We were joined by Dr. Idil Abdillahi, Wendy Gillis, Shane Martinez, and Dr. Kwame McKenzie, who together brought care, clarity, and deep insight to a conversation rooted in racial justice, mental health equity, and police accountability. They created an honest space to reflect on Andrew’s legacy, discuss the systemic failures that led to his death, and ask what has — or hasn’t — changed in the decade since.

For decades, racialized communities have navigated mental health systems that often excluded, harmed, or silenced them. At Across Boundaries, we’ve worked to change that—through programs rooted unapologetically in Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression. Not as a trend. Not as a checkbox. But as a fundamental way of reshaping care.

This year, we mark 30 years of doing just that.

Today, these principles are showing up across the sector. And yet—deep inequities remain.
As political and social landscapes shift, we ask:

What does progress really look like?
Where have we moved the needle—and where have we simply rebranded the same harms?
What still needs to be undone, reimagined, or built from the ground up?

On August 14, we’re convening mental health leaders, advocates, and community voices to sit with these questions—together.

This is a call-in to those who are doing the work, questioning the systems, and committed to care that is rooted in justice.

We hope you’ll be in the room.

Tune in for a grounded and insightful dialogue that bridges the personal and the political, offering a lens into how we can root our movements in embodied wisdom and resilience.

Too often, people wait for things to fall apart before they tend to their mental well-being. But wellness isn’t a reward for productivity — it’s what makes everything else possible.

• Rest is not a sign of weakness
• Setting boundaries isn’t selfish
• Slowing down doesn’t mean you’ve lost your edge

If you’re ready to take your energy back, here are a few ways to start:

1. Pause for a real check-in:
Instead of rushing through tasks, ask yourself, “How am I doing — truly?”

2. Make space for stillness:
Just ten minutes of intentional quiet can be more restorative than hours lost to scrolling.

3. Talk to yourself with care:
If you wouldn’t say it to a close friend or teammate, don’t say it to yourself.

Mental health isn’t a bonus feature. It’s the system that supports every decision, action, and connection.

Take care of yourself the way you’d take care of someone you love.
You don’t have to wait until things get worse — you’re already worthy of feeling well.
