Today our COO Vanessa was invited as a special guest by North Shore Rescue for the official opening of the SAR base at Capilano Gate (just inside the watershed gate at Cleveland Dam.
This new state of the art facility replaces their old Cap Gate SAR station, and provides critical space for rescue and helicopter operations in the western portion of our response area.
NSR hosted a number of dignitaries, including Federal, Provincial, Regional, and Municipal leaders, for the unveiling.
Notably, a number of representatives from the Bergwacht mountain rescue team in Oberau, Germany, were also present. This is NSR's sister team in the Bavarian Alps and the two organizations have spent considerable time sharing best practices, experiences, and lessons learned in search and rescue.
Vanessa was able to watch and participate in a number of educational demonstrations throughout the day, including highline rope rescue, medical, helicopter rescue, and ofcourse she got to meet all the search dogs. She was also able to tour the facility and learn the ins and outs of what goes into search and resuce and meet the crew.
The formal proceedings had to be paused to enable their helicopter rescue team to depart on a Mutual Aid call to assist Ridge Meadows SAR with a hoist rescue in a creek.
An incredible amount of thanks goes out to the brave people who volunteer at the north shore search and rescue. We thank them for their commitment and their bravery.
We also extend our thanks to Aaron Williams from Squamish Nation who honored us all with a blessing and educated those present on the proud history of the Squamish Nation.
