Plato’s Academy was not a formal school or college, it was a more informal society of thinkers who shared a common interest in studying subjects such as philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy.
Plato held the belief that knowledge was not purely the result of inner reflection but instead, could be sought through observation and therefore, taught to others.
The meeting location of Plato’s Academy was originally a public grove near the ancient city of Athens. Later, the garden was named for Akademos or Hecademus, a local hero after which the Academy was named. The garden was surrounded by art, architecture, and nature. It was famously adorned with statues, sepulchers, temples, and olive trees.
The Academy did not, at least during Plato's time, charge fees for membership. Therefore, there was probably not at that time a "school" in the sense of a clear distinction between teachers and students, or even a formal curriculum. There was, however, a distinction between senior and junior members.
In at least Plato's time, the school did not have any particular doctrine to teach; rather, Plato (and probably other associates of his) posed problems to be studied and solved by the others.
Eventually, other instructors joined, including Aristotle. The Academy persisted throughout the Hellenistic period as a skeptical school.
The Platonic Academy forms an important part of Plato’s intellectual legacy, and analyzing it can help us better understand Plato’s educational, political, and philosophical concerns. While studying the Academy sheds light on Plato’s thought, its history is also invaluable for gaining insight into one of the crucial sources of today’s academic institutions.
2022 is a new era for humanity, and human beings. It is a new era for me too.
In memory of Plato and his initiative, let me introduce you to my own way of teaching, and learning - The Academy of Higher Consciousnness - where I'll be sharing and discussing various subjects related to our ascension as di-vine beings.
