~Reality vs Potential

A buffer zone is what I refer to as the zone between having pain and symptoms and what you typically would refer to as your “normal” day to day life.

This is often an area that does not get addressed in the traditional Physiotherapy space.

Picture this scenario:

“Jane goes to see a Physiotherapist for persistent knee pain and after a few sessions Jane’s knee pain is gone and Jane returns back to day to day tasks”

Now most would look at this scenario and think that’s a job well done.

I look at this and think the practitioner missed potential in further helping Jane.

That potential lies in the buffer zone.

The reality is most leave physio with a very small buffer zone and that is what we often see people return for the same or similar injury down the road.

I work with clients in both a physio and personal training capacity to increase that buffer zone to help you not only achieve your goals but go beyond what you thought was possible.

We increase the buffer zone by doing strength training.

We increase the load on the tissues so that they build up a resilience to the stressors of life whether that be physical stressors or psychosocial stressors.

Having a larger buffer zone = more resilience and room for “error” when life inevitably throws you curveballs.

~Flare Ups~

Are a sudden worsening of pain, stiffness, fatigue or whatever might be bothering you which occurs after a period of progress made during the rehabilitation journey.

Flare ups nearly always occur during the rehab process so here are my top tips to not only prevent them but progress through them when they occur.

1️⃣ Identify early signs; these occur prior to a flare occurring and are usually signs your body and nervous system are starting to be stretched too thin.

2️⃣ Use active recovery strategies when they occur; avoid just resting!

3️⃣ Modify but don’t stop; some changes may need to be made but we should always try and stay on the movement train.

4️⃣ Incorporate cross training; this is great for prevention but also for returning back to sports. Cross training often provides a different stimuli to the body and can serve as a way to maintain cardiovascular fitness.

Flare ups can be very stressful for clients to go through and this is often when a skilled Physiotherapist can really help you return back on the right path to success.

~What is your Misogi for 2025?~

Misogi meaning “cleaning” is an ancient Japanese Shinto practice involving a cleansing process of the mind, body and spirit through challenging and difficult challenges that one places themselves through.

Think New Years Resolutions but bigger…

It was once believed that these traditions helped samurai warriors build stronger mental clarity, physical fitness and a tighter spiritual bond.

The Misogi can be a physical challenge, mental challenge or emotional / spiritual. The concept being that it is too far out of reach that going through it will help foster and build a stronger mind/ body connection.

A Misogi should scare and intimidate you.

It should push your limits to far exceed that you thought you could do.

Some new research involving individuals who are in hospice has pointed to the fact that those who pushed the limits. Took on endeavors that they once thought were impossible and those who failed and succeeded equally in these missions lived a life with higher satisfaction and fulfillment.

While undergoing a surgery my client sustained an unfortunate complication which left them without full use of their hand (as well as an acute paralysis during the operation)

This made performing tasks such as writing, dressing, and other fine motor skills very challenging.

When I first met this individual they were unable to fully close a fist and did not have full strength or mobility in their fingers.

After working very hard on fine motor skills I am so pleased to share that their writing has returned back to what it was prior to the surgery (you can see the S and Es were very challenging to start) and they have regained strength and mobility.

The rehab path and the plan to get you back doing the activities you love goes beyond just pain relief.

Often times a deeper reasoning exists which predisposed you to an injury, finding that reason and building strength in that area is how we can help manage future injuries and flare ups.

For me one of the biggest gaps I see in healthcare is the bridge between acute injury rehab and lifestyle management. By expanding my services I am attempting to fill this gap by being able to not only help you with your pain and injuries but be able to set you up for long term success by reducing the risk of future injuries.

Being a virtual service we have the flexibility of building at home workouts or workouts that you would do in a gym environment. Being 100% individualized to you means YOU decide what you want and what works best for you and I help you achieve those goals.
