Beef tallow — aka rendered animal fat, is making the rounds on TikTok as a “miracle moisturizer.” But just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it’s skin-safe. 👀
Let’s talk about it...
Tallow is highly comedogenic, not pH balanced for human skin, and lacks the stability and clinical validation we rely on in professional skin health.
Tallow is naturally high in oleic acid: a fatty acid that can be nourishing for some, but may not suit everyone. In higher concentrations, oleic acid has been shown to disrupt the skin barrier, increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and potentially contribute to inflammation. For those with acne-prone or sensitive skin, this imbalance can make it harder for the skin to stay hydrated and resilient, especially when used consistently over time.
And what most people don’t realize? Beef tallow can also disrupt your skin’s calcium gradient. A vital signaling system that controls barrier repair, cell turnover, and healthy communication between layers of the skin. When that gradient is thrown off, healing slows down, and the skin’s integrity suffers.
At Skin Co, We’re alllll for holistic health and honoring ancestral wellness— but there’s a MAJOR difference between “natural” and truly skin compatible. ❌
