Have you ever asked a child what's bothering them, only to be met with a shrug or a simple, "I don’t know?" You want to help, but they just seem to shut down or walk away. As a parent or caregiver, it’s totally normal to feel a bit stuck in those moments. When kids are upset, anxious, or acting out, they often struggle to find the right words to express what they’re feeling. Unlike adults, who can talk through their emotions, children tend to process their feelings differently—they play them out!

Play isn't just fun—it's an essential way for kids to express what they can't say in words. 🌈 Dive into the world of play therapy and discover how these sessions help children articulate their feelings! Link in Bio

When asked what she does in her spare time, Natasha responded "do mother's get spare time??? If I had it, reading or watching a show/movie." 😂It's no wonder, then, that she measures her time in a 'jiffy'--a real unit of measurement, 1/100th of a second...or so she says. It's this playfulness and tireless work ethic that are just some of the attributes that make Natasha a truly excellent therapist. Especially when it comes to working with families and kiddos!

Although her profession might be a bit different than what she imagined when she was a kid (she dreamed of being a pediatrician🩺) Natasha's passion for working with children is still very apparent. She has extensive experience in early childhood education and development, with particular experience working with childhood anxiety disorders. She's well-versed in Play Therapy and also has a background in Emotionally-Focused Therapy.

All this *AAAAND* she's bilingual?? That's right, Natasha can practice in both English and French. But her love of languages doesn't end there. As a psychologist--and a mom herself--Natasha has a deep understanding of the unique language we speak in our most intimate relationships. Whether that's with ourselves, our partners, or our kids--she hears you.

If Natasha seems like a clinician you--or your kiddos!--could really connect with, book your intake with us and request her today!

In the therapy world, historically we've focused on religion, faith, and spirituality as a source of healing and refuge after trauma. In the newest blog post on our website, Paige Cahill dives into the topic of religious trauma and asks us to consider what it means when faith is actually the source of your trauma.

Paige knows a lot about cows 🐄 She knows they have accents depending on where they're born and raised, and that they also have best friends. Her cat Jeepers 🐱 is her favourite thing in the whole wide world. A few days ago, she learned that there's a species of cactus 🌵 that's been found as far north as Peace River.

Just like her knowledge of, and love for, the flora and fauna, Paige's skills as a psychologist are top-tier! Paige's background is in anti-sexual violence advocacy and supporting survivors of sexual violence--one of her main areas of expertise. She also specializes in working with folks who've experienced religious trauma and are navigating the process of deconstruction.

If Paige feels like someone you could find comfort with, book your intake with us and request her today!

Although it might feel like our understanding of something like masculinity🧍‍♂is innate, it’s actually shaped by a lot of different forces–like our families, the media, and larger social structures–that are influencing us all the time. Many of these influences and the messages they feed us can be positive and affirming.

However--as an increasing number of more nuanced critiques have shown us over the last decade--many more of these messages and their sources reinforce a harmful status quo. Even if we agree with this, in whole or in part, it can be difficult to know how to feel or respond to these critiques. For every message that says traditional masculine values are harmful, toxic, or sexist, there are almost as many about how men who stray from those values are weak, unattractive, failures 😔

In his latest blog post, our resident male psychologist, Marek, aims to provide a bit of guidance on how to navigate 🧭 these different pressures around masculinity.

You might not realize this by looking at him, but he's done the West Coast Trail twice ⛰️, loves horror movies 😵, really likes spicy food 🌶️, and once (embarrassingly) broke his wrist from being hit too hard by a soccer ball ⚽

This 💎 of a human is Marek, YEG Family Counselling's resident male psychologist.

Marek looooves working with relationship dynamics, particularly with couples who are engaged in a form of ethical non-monogamy. Much of Marek's experience has been in supporting men struggling with their mental health as well as folks who've been subjected to sexual violence. In particular, he's got a knack for working with people who're trying to process shame and learn how to take accountability for having harmed someone else.

If any of this sounds like what you're looking for, book your intake with us and let us know you'd like to be connected with Marek!

Since it's National Indigenous People's Day *and* Pride Month *aaaaannnd* we work with q***r folks, we want to shout out our Two-Spirit kin who were navigating and inhabiting the beautiful nuances of gender expression and identity before many of our relatives were even in so-called Canada.

This should go without saying, but the Two-Spirit community is STILL 👏 HERE 👏 and thriving today, blessing us with transformative art and practices that can help our movements heal. Credit to Sacred Objects for the beautiful two spirit flag.

Two spirit folks, we see you and we're here for you if you ever need a little care for yourself.

Looking for a couple's counsellor can be overwhelming. First of all, there's TWO (or more!) PEOPLE'S SCHEDULES to organize. 🤯That, alone, can be enough to make folks put it off. Next, you've all got to agree to go and be on the same page about the clinician you'll see.

To help lighten the load, our CEO and Clinical Lead, Amy Nydam, wrote a blog with some questions you can ask your potential couple's counsellor to see if they're a good fit for you and your boo.

Amy is the CEO and Clinical Director at YEG Family Counselling. She just founded the place while parenting three little kids, no big deal🤙

When she isn't doing ~*~ all the things ~*~ Amy finds some much-deserved relaxation in the National Parks of the US and Canada. When she *is* doing all the things, she's also probably knitting to give her ADHD hands something to do!

As a Registered Psychologist, Amy's a certified Emotionally-Focused Therapist and a total NERD 🤓 about attachment and the nervous system. She thrives with couples and families navigating a lot of complexity, particularly around their gender, sexuality, and neurodiversity (bonus points if everyone involved is navigating all of the above). She's also worked extensively with folks who have been hurt, rejected, or alienated from their religious communities ⛪

Check out Amy's bio and, if you're interested, reserve a spot on her waitlist today! As you might've guessed, this lady's schedule fills up quick 😉

This Father's Day, we're here to remind you that dad's come in all shapes, sizes, and gender identities. Some are our models for how we want to be in the world, others might've taught us what to look out for in a partner 👀 Some dad's are gone and we wish they were here, some are around and we never see them, some are so present we take them for granted.

Whoever your dad is, and however you're feeling about them, you're not alone.

For everything family related, YEG Family Counselling is here for you.

Who's that strapping young gentleman greeting you at the YEG Family Counselling door, you ask? It's Jasper, our Cat in Residence 🐈 🐈 Jasper loves kiddos, is an eloquent speaker, and has a knack for adding an additional 'TW4YT7867564TWEGRHDJGLCTRYTEZ' to a document that you don't notice until it's too late 😉

We're all about keeping things easy-peasy 🍋But we also care about getting it right! That's why we ask everyone to complete an intake--either over the phone or by filling out the form on our website ✏️ ✏️

An intake is an opportunity for us to get the details we need to ensure you--and your partner, your child, or your family--are matched with the clinician best suited to your therapeutic goals. It's also an opportunity for you to get to know our service a little better.
