Today, I moved out of my office at Capilano University in North Vancouver! I started working there 29 summers ago in 1996!

Tomorrow, I help host a delegation visiting from Kushiro Public University in Japan - last day on campus.

Moving towards my August 27th retirement party…looking at old photos to send to colleagues who are organizing it.

Closing doors 🚪 as I start to imagine new ones to open 🤩…

I am just back from Tokyo, Japan where I had funding from Capilano University and Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU) to deliver this interactive talk on Embodied Cognition, a field of study that embraces most of what interests me in life - it was super fun!

https://www.agu4u.org/2025/05/27/ie-program-plenary-talk-the-mind-body-continuum/

Walter came with me so we could enjoy the weekend bookends and evenings in Kyoto and Tokyo. He also helped me navigate all the subways and transportation, which is no small thing to do in Japan!

Highlights include biking Kyoto (no accidents!), 3 spa experiences to help us recover day by day, the Bamboo Forest (Arashiyama), hanging out with AGU faculty, Joseph Dias and Andrew Reimann, and visiting Kamakura & Enoshima Island.

The trip was super intense with me presenting to 12 groups of AGU students on a planned English language intensive program next summer at Capilano University’s Squamish campus. I was doing some research on the curriculum and getting feedback from around 200 students. Now I am revising the curriculum based on all of this incredible data!

I want to thank my husband, Walter for supporting me through this intensity, and Professor Joseph Dias for organizing every detail of my visit to Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU).

One week to go until I go on vacation before I retire on August 31 from Capilano University (CapU) after almost 30 years. It has been an amazing journey towards the finish line of my career as CapU faculty in the English for Academic Purposes Department. My heart is very full ❤️

Some photos from our 10-day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan!

Walter and I had a wonderful weekend visit with my niece Louina and brother Richard from Sweden!

Louina is in Vancouver doing a practicum for her university in Sweden on producing and engineering music. She is also a singer-songwriter-producer like her dad.

My brother Richard organized this practicum for Louina with Howard Redekopp and Erik Nielsen. Howard produced one of Richard’s albums in 1999 when he lived in Vancouver. Howard has become a world class producer. What an opportunity for Louie!

It will be fun to play Auntie while Louie is in Vancouver, staying with my cousins Greg and Kathi! We will see her next when in town for Easter 🥰🥰 🥰

Overall Therapeutic Approach

Every 2 weeks, we move from legs & feet (grounding) to hips (emotions) to lower back (empowerment) to upper back to neck & shoulders (love & light). Physical themes are linked with energetic-psycho-social-spiritual themes each week. Mind & emotions (spiritual awakening) themes are woven into each class this term. You will not only experience asana (postures) but the other limbs of Patanjali's classical 8-limbed system of Yoga, including deep breathing and meditation. Chanting, visualization, and mudras (hand gestures) are used to enhance the therapeutic, healing experience.

Students are asked to provide an intake/self-assessment/waiver before the series to clarify present individual therapeutic needs. We also do a check in during the first 5 minutes of each class to clarify goals linked to the topic that day, and any other therapeutic considerations for each individual that may be arising. Maggie creates the class based on this daily needs-assessment and cues modifications for those in the class that day.
