The Alberta Government plans to move thousands of people with disabilities from AISH into a new program called ADAP. This shift could mean $200 less each month — forcing many to live with even greater poverty.

Visit https://inclusionalberta.org/understanding-proposed-changes-to-aish-the-new-adap-and-how-to-respond-to-the-adap-survey/ to read about what we know about ADAP and to help you voice any concerns to the Government of Alberta by the September 12 deadline in the ADAP survey or with a written submission to adapengagement@gov.ab.ca. Telephone town halls will be advertised in early September.

"The UCP is forcing those on AISH to apply for a federal benefit with the full knowledge that they’ll deduct it from their earnings—leaving Alberta’s most vulnerable no better off." - Kevin Sabo, editor of the Stettler Independent and a journalist for Black Press Media.

Even though the Alberta government is unfairly clawing back the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), AISH recipients are required to apply for it and notify their local AISH office of their application status. Those who do not risk having their October AISH payment deducted by $200, the full amount of the CDB.

Our webpage of information on the CDB in Alberta has been updated to include easy to use form letters from The Plan Institute that you can use to notify AISH of your applications status. For more information and to access the form letters, visit: https://inclusionalberta.org/canada-disability-benefit-in-alberta-the-facts-and-how-to-take-action/

"...At the end of the day, if the amount is still below the poverty line, I’m not sure it matters. We shouldn’t be content to keep people in poverty just because they’re less in poverty than someone else.” -Trish Bowman, Inclusion Alberta CEO

Inclusion Alberta CEO Trish Bowman recently spoke to CTV's Alberta Primetime about the Alberta government's decision to increase rent for Community Housing tenants who receive AISH, as well as the clawback of the Canada Disability Benefit.

"Finding another $220 in your income when you’re trying to live on $1,900 a month is significant, and giving people time to figure that out is going to be really critical.

It just doesn’t factor in the unique costs and challenges that people living with disabilities experience."

"...Albertans with disabilities remain resilient. They remain proud. They are grateful, not for crumbs, but for every person who treats them with respect, for every doctor who listens, every stranger who sees their worth, every advocate who still has the energy to fight.

But make no mistake, they are owed more than gratitude. They are owed justice. For justice is the price of civilization."

Edmonton-based disability advocate Don Slater wrote a powerful piece on the morality of the Alberta government clawing back the Canada Disability Benefit. Read it on the curated news page of our website here: https://inclusionalberta.org/curated-news-content/

Inclusion Alberta’s Rotary Employment Partnership is creating life-changing job opportunities while providing an untapped labour market to Alberta’s business community. The partnership has created over 900 jobs to date in diverse fields such as trades, hospitality, manufacturing, childcare, culinary, the arts and office administration.

One of the latest jobs created is at ATS Traffic, who hired a second employee through Inclusion Alberta’s Rotary Employment Partnership!

After seeing first-hand the success of hiring an individual with an intellectual disability through the Partnership at their Edmonton location, ATS Traffic in Calgary tapped into this valuable labour pool and hired Daniel as a Warehouse Labourer. In his new role, Daniel is responsible for a variety of tasks such as keeping signs and equipment maintained, cleaned, and organized, and assisting with processing orders for rental and sales. Daniel’s supervisor says that he has been a great fit so far, and does high quality work of the tasks assigned to him. As a company where safety is at the forethought of every action, particularly during the very busy summer construction season, Daniel’s attention to detail and willingness to ask for clarity when learning new tasks has helped him be successful. ATS Traffic appreciates that support is always available from Rotary Employment Partnership staff whenever they or Daniel need it.

Thank you to ATS Traffic for being a committed inclusive employer and ally to individuals with intellectual disabilities, and congratulations on your great new employee. Congratulations to Daniel on your new job!

Individuals with intellectual disabilities can and want to work. Yet, despite their talents and ambitions, close to 80% of Albertans with intellectual disabilities remain unemployed, a stark and shameful statistic that reflects missed opportunities for a dedicated and committed workforce. Join inclusive businesses like ATS Traffic to take action to open doors, build inclusive workforces, and tap into an often-overlooked talent pool.
