Our hearts touch all of those who felt the compassion and wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh, beloved Zen teacher, peace activist and author. We bow with the deepest gratitude for Thay’s teachings on mindfulness and ethics that have benefitted multitudes worldwide and will continue to do so. Here is an excerpt from Jack Kornfield’s "The Wise Heart" about Thay and the teachings he offered at Spirit Rock:

"Sometimes a teacher can help the whole community find a way to stillness. There was a silence around [my teacher] Ajahn Chah when he sat with us that showed a possibility of our own steadiness. Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh carries this stillness even as he moves. Periodically, he has come to offer teachings to several thousand students gathered outdoors at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. Each time, as he walked up the road to begin teaching, the slow, beautifully careful placement of his steps on the earth was visible to all. A stillness fell over the crowd. The power of Thich Nhat Hanh’s mindfulness brought everyone into the present. His presence inspired a profound attention."

This is great read to the end!!!
And as you get quieter, which can happen not for everyone, but for many as they learn the
art of mindfulness of breathing, then what becomes important is to make the attention
quieter. Let the breath become more subtle as it does, and match the subtlety of the breath
with the subtlety or care of the attention.
Because otherwise, you start to push the breath a little bit, because you can't feel it so well.
And if you can't feel it, it actually becomes an invitation when you're present with it for the
attention to get softer and more careful

Sometimes, people say, well, then it gets really boring.

There's a famous Zen story of a young monk who went to the master and said, I've been paying attention to my breath, and it's so boring. Don't you have anything better to show me? And the master grabbed the monk, as they did in those zen days, right, dragged him over to the little stream that ran through the monastery and held him underwater for a while. He struggled and struggled. And finally, the master let him up. He said, boring, huh?

Martha is offering two complimentary meditation practices this month 🙏🏼 Meditation is a practice in training awareness – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and our reactions to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without judgment. And eventually, you may start to better understand them.

Join Martha Sunday August 18th and 25th at 7:30pm for a meditation practice. You will learn the basic principles for developing an at home practice as well as experience a guided meditation.

Whether you have never tried meditation or you already have a regular practice, this practice is for all.
