We often think of bacteria as being bad, but probiotics are frequently called “good bacteria” because they help to keep your gut healthy. These tiny microorganisms populate the small and large intestines, supporting digestion, immune health, and more.

You can find probiotics in some foods, like yogurt and kimchi, and in supplements.

Ask our pharmacist for advice on taking a probiotic supplement.

Pollinators like bees are vital to growing the foods we need, and most will ignore us if we leave them alone.

But do you know what to do when you or someone with you has been stung by a bee or wasp?

For most people, a sting is just painful. Dropping into the pharmacy for pain medications or an antihistamine can do the trick!

But for a few, it can be life-threatening. You may not know you're one of them until after you've been stung. A severe allergic reaction to bee stings (anaphylaxis) requires emergency treatment.

Talk with us to know the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and what you can do to protect you and your family.

Protect your family from sunburns, and long-term sun damage, by following this advice from the Canadian Dermatology Association:

Use an SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen – and reapply often, especially after swimming and sweating.
Wear a hat, sunglasses, and cover up with as much as possible.
Stay in the shade and try to schedule your outdoor activities around the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Talk to our pharmacist about your risks and how to stay safe this summer.

Summer vacation is calling! But if you’re headed on a far-flung holiday, you should make sure you’re up to date on your travel vaccines.

Depending on where you are travelling, you could be at risk for many vaccine preventable illnesses. For many places, the immunizations you might need could include protection for hepatitis A, travellers’ diarrhea, and meningitis.

Everyone experiences spikes in their blood pressure at times, but usually only for short periods, like during exercise or a stressful situation. It becomes a problem when blood pressure stays higher than normal over time.

Healthy lifestyle habits including eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and getting enough physical activity, can help to reduce your chance of developing high blood pressure.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) develops when microbes, like bacteria, get into your urinary system. This type of infection is very common, especially among women, but it can be quite uncomfortable.

If you have a UTI, you’re likely to experience some or all of the following symptoms:

Peeing often and having difficulty holding urine
Pain in the lower abdomen
Urine that’s cloudy, foul-smelling, and/or contains a small amount of blood

Stop by the pharmacy today if you have any concerns.

Sneezing, an itchy nose, and red, watery eyes are all classic signs of allergic rhinitis (also known as “hay fever”). Symptoms develop when your body’s immune system reacts to an irritant in the air, like tree pollen, pet dander or mold spores.

You can’t prevent hay fever, but you can take steps to minimize your allergy symptoms:

Avoid touching your face or rubbing your nose and eyes.
Keep your windows closed on days when pollen counts are high even throughout the fall months.
Use filters in your vacuum and air conditioner.
Wash your hands often, especially after playing with pets.

For many, spring weather can exacerbate asthma symptoms. Pollen is a common trigger, but did you know that asthma symptoms can also be triggered by temperature changes, insect repellants and yard fertilizers?

Now is a great time to check the expiry date of your inhalers—or if you can’t find them, call the pharmacy to request a refill.

Changes in diet, lack of sleep, stress, and some medications (including certain antidepressants, treatments for incontinence, and allergies) can all cause constipation. It’s an issue that most people deal with at some point, and one that becomes more common as we age.

For occasional constipation, talk with our pharmacist who can recommend dietary and other lifestyle changes, as well as over-the-counter treatments. If you are experiencing problems often, our pharmacist can also advise on when you should speak with your doctor.
