People lose weight while they run. The trouble is you aren't just losing fat. In order to maintain lean muscle mass while exercising you need protein. Protein doesn't get nearly enough credit for its role in maintaining lean muscle mass while we participate in endurance activities like running.

Consuming 1.5-3.0 grams per kilogram of body weight per day of protein, spread evenly over 5 periods of the day, seems like an awful lot of protein, and indeed it is, but myriad studies continue to demonstrate that this level of protein intake is the fundamental way to maintain lean muscle mass.
