Dr. Joey Newbigging, POCUS Program Director for Emergency Medicine at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), recently had a pregnant woman who came to the Emergency Department with severe abdominal pain.

Thanks to a small, portable device known as a point-of-care ultrasound ( ) machine (which can be used bedside to quickly diagnose a patient), the doctor was able to swiftly diagnose the patient with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy within a minute.

“She was in the operating room within an hour,” Dr. Newbigging explained. “Without this (POCUS) technology, that wouldn’t have happened so quickly.”

This story underscores the transformative impact of POCUS machines, which are now receiving crucial support thanks to a generous $17,500 donation from the Queen's University Muslim Physician Group and the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM). 💗

Consider making a gift and help the Rose of Hope Golf Tournament organizers raise $1 million over the next five years to establish the Rose of Hope Clinical Chair in Breast Health at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. 🌹

As the only Clinical Chair in Breast Health in this region—and proudly bearing the Rose of Hope name—the role will generate a lasting impact. “Every research paper, every medical conference, every innovation launched will carry the legacy of the donors who made this possible,” says Sherri McCullough, Rose of Hope Chair. “It’s a lasting investment in women’s health.” 🎗️

The stakes are high and the need is urgent. With breast cancer diagnoses on the rise in southeastern Ontario, the push to enhance care and outcomes has never been more critical.

When Megan Wheatley climbs Mount Kilimanjaro this August, it’s not just for the view — it’s for everyone whose injuries aren’t always visible. 🌄

After surviving a traumatic brain injury in 2013, Megan faced a decade of quiet battles — with memory, speech, focus, and the invisible weight of starting life over. 🧠

Now, she’s climbing for change. Climbing for visibility. Climbing for support.

She’s raising $5,000 for Community Brain Injury Services at Providence Care — and every step she takes, every dollar raised, helps someone else rebuild their life too.

The Kingston Police Association has been a great supporter of local healthcare over the decades, donating proceeds from various annual events, fundraisers and making gifts in memory of loved ones.

Recently, the Kingston Police Association generously donated $12,500 in proceeds from their 2024 and 2025 'Cops for Cancer Memorial Golf Tournament.' 🏌️

Their gift will support the Children’s Cancer Fund at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) in loving memory of 8-year-old Parker, the son of Officer Scott, who passed away in September of 2023.

We thank the Kingston Police Association and Parker’s family for their kind donation and for supporting other families undergoing treatment at KHSC. ♥️

Recently, Dr. Danielle Kain received recognition through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation's program and was joined by Sherri McCullough, Chair of Kingston Health Sciences Centre's Board of Directors to celebrate! 🎉

Dr. Kain is a true rock star, and not just because of her singing at the recent Banding Together with Old Docs New Tricks concert, but because of her depth of skill and knowledge. For those who do not know Dr. Kain, she is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Medicine at Queen's University Health Sciences, Co-Chair (Interim) of the Division of Palliative Medicine, and Clinical Director of Palliative Care at Providence Care and currently serves as the President of the Medical Staff Association at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

A grateful patient made a gift in her honour through the program stating that "A mere 'thank you' seems woefully inadequate to describe the level of gratitude my family and I feel towards Dr Danielle Kain and her Palliative Care team. Danielle brings a level of compassion and empathy during the most difficult times of our lives."

When asked what this honour meant to her, Dr. Kain shared: "It is a really good feeling. It is incredibly humbling to know that someone who is in the midst of grieving the loss of a loved one can make the emotional space for generosity and gratitude alongside the grief - our patients and their families teach us so much about courage, and grace."

We’re proud to celebrate a remarkable act of generosity and legacy! 💙

In December 2022, Renée and Lawrence O’Farrell made a five-year, $350,000 pledge through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation to support at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). In honour of this incredible gift, an x-ray room has been named in memory of Renée’s father, Dr. Salomon L. Fransman, for 25 years.

Dr. Fransman, a visionary and former head of KHSC’s Diagnostic Imaging Department, was instrumental in advancing imaging care in Canada—bringing the country’s first rapid CT Scanner to Kingston General Hospital and helping establish the Eastern Ontario School of X-Ray Technology. He was also the first radiologist in the world to use this pioneering CT technology in 1977.

Renovations to the dedicated room are now complete, and we were honoured to invite Renée and Larry to see the space and their recognition sign as we celebrate their lasting impact on healthcare in our region.

Thank you, Renée and Larry, for helping shape the future while honouring the past.

Shoutout to Dr. Ameer Farooq of Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) for receiving TWO recognitions recently! 🎉

For those who don't know Dr. Farooq, he is an Assistant Professor with Queen's University Health Sciences and a colorectal surgeon at KHSC. He is also the host of Cold Steel: A podcast for surgeons. 🩺

"It is such a privilege to be able to take care of patients. We don't do this work for the recognition but certainly it helps us to remember why we got into this profession - to help folks through really difficult times in their lives," shared Dr. Farooq. "It is not easy to be a surgeon. There are many highs, and many lows. This recognition goes a long way to helping us feel rejuvenated and connected to our purpose."

If you or a loved one receives exceptional care at KHSC or Providence Care and would like to thank a team member or entire department for their care, please consider thanking them through the program by making a gift in their name. Visit www.uhkf.ca/hyc to today. ♥️

"Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of what makes us human and if you can show it to someone who tried their best to care for you, it likely means the world to them."
